Question 1262: Is it possible to perform more than one sacrifice for Eid al-Adha?

✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
1 عَنْ مُعَاوِیَةَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: ذَبَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَنْ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ بَقَرَةً بَقَرَةً وَ نَحَرَ هُوَ سِتّاً وَ سِتِّینَ بَدَنَةً وَ نَحَرَ عَلِیٌّ ع أَرْبَعاً وَ ثَلَاثِینَ بَدَنَةً الْحَدِیثَ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) would sacrifice one cow on behalf of each of the Mothers of the Believers (i.e., his wives), and he himself sacrificed 66 camels, and Ali (peace be upon him) sacrificed 34 camels!
2 عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الرَّازِیِّ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنِ الرِّضَا عَنْ آبَائِهِ قَالَ کَانَ النَّبِیُّ یُضَحِّی بِکَبْشَیْنِ أَقْرَنَیْنِ أَمْلَحَیْنِ.

Imam Reza (peace be upon him) narrated from his ancestors that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) would sacrifice two horned, black and white rams!
3 قَالَ: وَ کَانَ أَمِیرُ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ یُضَحِّی عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ کُلَّ سَنَةٍ بِکَبْشٍ یَذْبَحُهُ وَ یَقُولُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِیَ لِلَّذِی فَطَرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ الْأَرْضَ حَنِیفاً مُسْلِماً وَ مَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِکِینَ- إِنَّ صَلاتِی وَ نُسُکِی وَ مَحْیایَ وَ مَماتِی لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِینَ اللَّهُمَّ مِنْکَ وَ لَکَ ثُمَّ یَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ إنَّ هَذَا عَنْ نَبِیِّکَ- ثُمَّ یَذْبَحُهُ وَ یَذْبَحُ کَبْشاً آخَرَ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ.

Shaykh Saduq said: The Commander of the Faithful Ali (peace be upon him) would sacrifice a ram every year on behalf of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) and would say (when slaughtering it):
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِیَ لِلَّذِی فَطَرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ الْأَرْضَ حَنِیفاً مُسْلِماً وَ مَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِکِینَ إِنَّ صَلاتِی وَ نُسُکِی وَ مَحْیایَ وَ مَماتِی لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِینَ اللَّهُمَّ مِنْکَ وَ لَکَ
Then he would say: O Allah! Indeed, this is on behalf of Your Prophet, and then he would slaughter it and sacrifice another ram on his own behalf!
4 قَالَ: وَ ضَحَّی رَسُولُ اللَّهِ بِکَبْشَیْنِ ذَبَحَ وَاحِداً بِیَدِهِ وَ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ هَذَا عَنِّی وَ عَمَّنْ لَمْ یُضَحِّ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَیْتِی- وَ ذَبَحَ الْآخَرَ وَ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ هَذَا عَنِّی وَ عَمَّنْ لَمْ یُضَحِّ مِنْ أُمَّتِی.

Shaykh Saduq said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) would sacrifice two rams. He slaughtered one with his own hand and said: O Allah! Let this be on behalf of myself and those of my family who did not sacrifice, and he slaughtered the other and said: O Allah! Let this be on behalf of myself and those of my nation who did not sacrifice!
✅No prohibition has been narrated regarding multiple sacrifices on the day of Eid al-Adha, and various narrational evidences show that multiple sacrifices can be performed on behalf of oneself and others.

5 عَنْ إِسْمَاعِیلَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ السَّکُونِیِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ آبَائِهِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ هَذَا الْأَضْحَی لِتَتَسعَ مَسَاکِینُکُمْ مِنَ اللَّحْمِ فَأَطْعِمُوهُمْ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his father from his ancestors that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: Indeed, this Eid al-Adha has been designated so that your poor can be provided with meat, so feed them!
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَی مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَجِّلْ لِوَلِیِّکَ الْفَرَجَ وَ الْعَافِیَةَ وَ النَّصْرَ
