Question 1189: Do the Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers have the call to prayer (adhan), the call to stand for prayer (iqamah), and supererogatory (nafl) prayers? When does its time begin?

1 عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ أَ رَأَيْتَ صَلَاةَ الْعِيدَيْنِ هَلْ فِيهِمَا أَذَانٌ وَ إِقَامَةٌ قَالَ لَيْسَ فِيهِمَا أَذَانٌ وَ لَا إِقَامَةٌ وَ لَكِنْ يُنَادَى الصَّلَاةَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ الْحَدِيثَ.

Isma'il ibn Jabir said: 'I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): 'Inform me whether the Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers have the adhan and iqamah?' The Imam said: 'They do not have the adhan and iqamah, but the call is made three times: 'Prayer!''
2 قَالَ: وَ كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذَا انْتَهَى إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى تَقَدَّمَ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ بِلَا أَذَانٍ وَ لَا إِقَامَةٍ.

Shaykh Saduq said: 'When the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) would reach the place of prayer (for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha), he would step forward and lead the people in prayer without an adhan or iqamah!'
3 عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّه عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فِي الْفِطْرِ وَ الْأَضْحَى قَالَ لَيْسَ فِيهِمَا أَذَانٌ وَ لَا إِقَامَةٌ وَ لَيْسَ بَعْدَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ وَ لَا قَبْلَهُمَا صَلَاةٌ.

Muhammad ibn Muslim said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the prayer on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.' The Imam said: 'There is no adhan in it and no iqamah, and there is no prayer before or after it.'
4 عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْداللَّهِ قَالَ: لَا تَقْضِي وَتْرَ لَيْلَتِكَ يَعْنِي فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ إِنْ كَانَ فَاتَكَ حَتَّى تُصَلِّيَ الزَّوَالَ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'On the day of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, if you missed the Witr prayer that night, you do not make it up until you perform the Dhuhr prayer (or the Dhuhr nafl prayers) on that day!'
5 عَنِ ابْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ لَيْسَ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ وَ لَا يَوْمَ الْأَضْحَى أَذَانٌ وَ لَا إِقَامَةٌ أَذَانُهُمَا طُلُوعُ الشَّمْسِ إِذَا طَلَعَتْ خَرَجُوا وَ لَيْسَ قَبْلَهُمَا وَ لَا بَعْدَهُمَا صَلَاةٌ.

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'There is no adhan or iqamah on the day of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha. The time for the adhan (and the entry of its time) is sunrise. When the sun rises, they go out, and there is no prayer before or after them.'
6 عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ الْهَاشِمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: رَكْعَتَانِ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ لَيْسَ تُصَلَّيَانِ فِي مَوْضِعٍ إِلَّا فِي الْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ تُصَلَّى فِي مَسْجِدِ الرَّسُولِ فِي الْعِيدِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى لَيْسَ ذَلِكَ إِلَّا بِالْمَدِينَةِ لِأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَعَلَهُ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Two rak'ahs of prayer are a tradition that are not performed anywhere other than Medina.' He said: 'You perform these two rak'ahs on the day of Eid in the Mosque of the Prophet before going to the place of the Eid prayer, and this is only in Medina, because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) did this!'
✅Based on the above and other narrations, the Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers do not have the adhan or iqamah, and only the call is made:
الصَّلَاةَ الصَّلَاةَ الصَّلَاة
✅The time for the Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers begins at sunrise. When the sun rises, the prayer leader and the people head toward the place of prayer.
✅There is no prayer before or after the Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers, and no prayer is performed until noon on the day of Eid, not even the make-up of the Witr prayer of that night.
✅According to narration 6, it is a tradition only for the people of Medina to perform two rak'ahs of prayer in the Prophet's Mosque before going to the Eid prayer.
