1 أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ مَا عِلَّةُ الْأُضْحِيَّةِ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ يُغْفَرُ لِصَاحِبِهَا عِنْدَ أَوَّلِ قَطْرَةٍ تَقْطُرُ مِنْ دَمِهَا عَلَى الْأَرْضِ وَ لِيَعْلَمَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مَنْ يَتَّقِيهِ بِالْغَيْبِ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَنْ يَنالَ اللَّهَ لُحُومُها وَ لا دِماؤُها وَ لكِنْ يَنالُهُ التَّقْوى مِنْكُمْ ثُمَّ قَالَ انْظُرْ كَيْفَ قَبِلَ اللَّهُ قُرْبَانَ هَابِيلَ وَ رَدَّ قُرْبَانَ قَابِيلَ.

Abu Basir said: I asked Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him): 'What is the reason for the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha?' He said: 'With the first drop of blood that falls to the ground, its owner is forgiven, and it is so that those who fear God in secret can be distinguished. Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Glorious, says: 'Neither their meat nor their blood reaches Allah; rather, it is your piety that reaches Him.''

Then he said: 'Look at how God accepted the sacrifice of Habil and rejected the sacrifice of Qabil!'

2 عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ اسْتَفْرِهُوا ضَحَايَاكُمْ فَإِنَّهَا مَطَايَاكُمْ عَلَى الصِّرَاطِ.

Imam al-Kazim (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'Choose good and valuable sacrifices for Eid al-Adha, for they are your mounts on the Sirat (the bridge over hell)!'

3 عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّه لِأُمُّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا وَ قَدْ قالت له يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَحْضُرُ الْأَضْحَى وَ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي ثَمَنُ الْأُضْحِيَّةِ فَأَسْتَقْرِضُ وَ أُضَحِّي قَالَ اسْتَقْرِضِي وَ ضَحّی فَإِنَّهُ دَيْنٌ مَقْضِيٌّ.

Imam al-Kazim (peace be upon him) said:

Umm Salama said to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family):

'Eid al-Adha is approaching, and I do not have the money for a sheep to sacrifice. Should I take a loan and sacrifice?' He said: 'Take a loan and sacrifice, for it is a debt that is paid off!'

4 عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِي عَنْ عَلِيٍّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: لَوْ عَلِمَ النَّاسُ مَا فِي الْأُضْحِيَّةِ لَاسْتَدَانُوا وَ ضَحَّوْا إِنَّهُ لَيُغْفَرُ لِصَاحِبِ الْأُضْحِيَّةِ عِنْدَ أَوَّلِ قَطْرَةٍ تَقْطُرُ مِنْ دَمِهَا.

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: 'If people knew what there is in the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha, they would surely take a loan and sacrifice!'

Indeed, with the first drop of its blood that falls, the owner of the sacrifice is forgiven!

5 عَنْ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِين قَالَ أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّه يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَى فَاطِمَةَ فَقَالَ يَا فَاطِمَةُ قُومِي وَ اشْهَدِي أُضْحِيَّتَكِ فَإِنَّ لَكِ بِكُلِّ قَطْرَةٍ مِنْ دَمِهَا كَفَّارَةَ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ أَمَا إِنَّهَا يُؤْتَى بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَتُوضَعُ فِي مِيزَانِكِ مِثْلَ مَا هِيَ سَبْعِينَ ضِعْفاً قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لآِلِ مُحَمَّدٍ هَذَا خَاصَّةً أَمْ لِكُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ عَامَّةً فَقَالَ بَلْ لآِلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said: On the day of Eid al-Adha, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) came until he entered upon Fatimah (peace be upon her) and said: 'O Fatimah! Arise and attend to your sacrifice, for for you, for every drop of its blood, there is an expiation for every sin. Know that it will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and placed on your scale, seventy times its current amount!'

Al-Miqdad said: 'O Messenger of God! Is this specific to the family of Muhammad or for every believer (all believers)?' He said: 'Rather, it is for the family of Muhammad and for the believers!'

6 قَالَ علي : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَ هُوَ يَخْطُبُ لِلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ الْأَضْحَى وَ هُوَ يَقُولُ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ هَذَا يَوْمُ الثَّجِّ وَ الْعَجِّ فَالثَّجُ يُهْرِقُونَ فِيهِ الدِّمَاءَ فَمَنْ صَدَقَتْ نِيَّتُهُ كَانَتْ أَوَّلُ قَطْرَةٍ كَفَّارَةً لِكُلِّ ذَنْبٍ

📚 Al-Ja'fariyat, p. 46

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: I heard the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) while he was giving a sermon on the day of Eid al-Adha, saying: 'Today is the day of 'Thajj' and the day of 'Ajj'! So 'Thajj' is when blood (of the sacrifice) is spilled, so for the one whose intention is truthful, the first drop of the sacrifice's blood is an expiation for every sin!'
