Iddah of Mut'ah

✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:

📚Al-Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 464

Abd al-Rahman said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a man who marries a woman in a temporary marriage and then dies, does that woman have an iddah?' He said: 'She observes an iddah of four months and ten days, and if the woman's period is over and the man is still alive, her iddah is one and a half menstruations, like what is on a slave girl!'

📚Al-Ihtijaj, p. 488

Himyari wrote to the Master of the Age (peace be upon him): 'A man marries a woman for a known dowry and a known period, and her period is still remaining. So he absolves her and forgives her the rest of the period, and the woman had menstruated three days before he absolved her. Is it permissible for another man to marry her for a known dowry and a known period after she becomes clean from this menstruation, or must she have another menstruation?'

The Imam answered: 'She must have another menstruation because the shortest iddah is one complete menstruation and purity!'

📚Qurb al-Isnad, p. 159

Ahmad said: 'I heard Imam Ridha (peace be upon him) say: 'Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'The iddah of mut'ah is one menstruation,' and he said to one of his companions, '45 days!'

✅Based on the above narrations and others, six states can be imagined for the iddah of a temporary marriage:

1️⃣ If the man dies during the temporary marriage contract, the woman must observe an iddah of four months and ten days, which begins on the day of her husband's death.

2️⃣ If a woman becomes pregnant in a temporary marriage and her mut'ah period ends, and her husband is alive, her iddah is until she gives birth, whether it is one day left until she gives birth or several months!

3️⃣ If a woman becomes pregnant in a temporary marriage and her husband dies during the temporary marriage contract, the end of her iddah is when both four months and ten days have passed since the death of her husband and she has given birth. If one of these two comes earlier, she must wait until the other also ends, and then her iddah is over.

4️⃣ If a woman enters into a temporary marriage and does not become pregnant, and her husband does not die during her period, and she is of menstruating age (i.e., not menopausal or a minor) but does not menstruate, her iddah is 45 days or 45 nights, which begins from the end of the temporary marriage period.

5️⃣ If a woman enters into a temporary marriage and does not become pregnant, and her husband does not die during her period, and her menstruation is regular, for her iddah, one menstruation and two menstruations have been narrated in the narrations:

✅According to the narrations of one menstruation, the iddah of mut'ah is for one complete period of menstruation and becoming clean from it. That is, after the end of the mut'ah period, she must pass one complete menstruation, the days of which vary depending on when the mut'ah ends.

Based on this, if a woman's temporary marriage period ends during her menstruation, this menstruation is incomplete and is not counted, and she must wait until she becomes clean and passes the period of purity, and she must also pass the menstruation after this purity completely, and when she becomes clean from this menstruation, her iddah is over.

And if, for example, on the second day of her purity, her period ends, she must wait until she menstruates after this period of purity and passes the days of menstruation completely, and when she becomes clean from this menstruation, her iddah is over.

✅However, according to some narrations in which the iddah of mut'ah is set at two menstruations, for its fulfillment, the woman must pass two complete menstruations after the end of the temporary marriage period for her iddah to be over, and depending on when the period ends, the days of this iddah also vary.

✅Although one direct menstruation, which consists of one complete menstruation, has been mentioned in various narrations for the iddah of mut'ah, and according to the narration in 📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 5, p. 451 and others, great scholars like Zurarah and Sheikh Kulayni and others held this view, some act according to the narrations of two menstruations for caution.

6️⃣ Women who are menopausal or have not reached the age of menstruation or have not had intercourse do not need to observe an iddah, and the narrations for this have been mentioned in the following link:
