459 views 02 Sep 2021

Answer

✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:

📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 4, p. 5

Jamil said: I heard Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) obligated zakat on nine things and excused it from others: on silver and gold, wheat and barley, dates and raisins, camels, cows, and sheep!

Then Tayyar said to the Imam in my presence: Indeed, we have many grains that are called rice. The Imam said: We also have many grains! He said: Is there anything (i.e., zakat) on them too? The Imam said: No! I have informed you that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) excused it from others!

✅ Based on the above narration and many other narrations, the main and well-known zakat is obligated only on these nine things with specific limits, conditions, and rulings, and today's money is not included in the above cases, and the well-known zakat which has a specific nisab (threshold) and rulings is not due on it. However! However! However, the important point is that many other rights have been established for us in our various types of wealth that do not have the specific conditions of zakat, and we are obligated to pay those rights, and in many cases, severe punishments have been specified for their neglect.

Therefore, although today's money does not have the necessary conditions for zakat to be due on it, it is necessary for us to know the other rights and duties of these assets and strive to pay them.

✅ Now, in a few parts, we will mention some of the narrations about these financial duties and rights so that we may act upon them after being aware of them:

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 500

Mufaddal said: I was with Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him). Then a man asked him: On what amount of wealth is zakat obligatory? The Imam said to him: Do you want the apparent zakat or the inner zakat?! He said: I want both! The Imam said: As for the apparent zakat, it is 25 dirhams of zakat for every one thousand dirhams of silver. But as for the inner zakat, it is that you do not take for yourself what your brother needs more than you!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 501

Amir ibn Jidh'ah said: A man came to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) and said: O Aba Abdillah! I want a loan until I become rich! So the Imam said to him: Until the time of an income that is obtained? He said: By Allah, no; He said: Then until a transaction whose (amount) returns? He said: By Allah, no; He said: Then until a property that is sold? He said: By Allah, no, He said: Then you are from those for whom Allah has established a right in our wealth; then he called for a purse that contained dirhams and he put his hand into it and gave him a handful of it. Then he said: Be mindful of Allah, and do not be extravagant nor be stingy, but let your spending be in moderation, between these two; and indeed, extravagance and excessive spending are from wastefulness, and Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, says (in verse 26 of Surah Al-Isra): 'And do not squander wastefully and be extravagant.'

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 498

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, has established a duty for the poor in the wealth of the rich that they are not praised for except by paying it, and that is zakat, by giving which their lives are protected and by which they are called Muslims!

But Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, has obligated other rights in the wealth of the rich besides zakat: So Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, says (in verse 25 of Surah Al-Ma'arij): 'And those in whose wealth there is a known right,' so the known right is something other than zakat, and it is something that a person obligates and establishes upon himself in his wealth that it is obligatory to obligate it according to his ability and the extent of his wealth, and what he has obligated upon himself, he pays it if he wants on a daily basis, and if he wants on a weekly basis, and if he wants on a monthly basis!

And also Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, says (in verse 17 of Surah Al-Hadid): 'Lend Allah a good loan' and this is other than zakat!

And Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, also says (in verse 32 of Surah Ibrahim): 'They spend from what We have provided for them secretly and openly.'

And also ma'un which is a loan that a person gives and a commodity that he lends and a good deed that he performs!

And also from what Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, has obligated in wealth besides zakat is the saying of Allah, the Exalted and Glorified (in verse 22 of Surah Al-Ra'd) which says: 'Those who connect what Allah has commanded to be connected (i.e., with relatives) connect it.'

And whoever pays all that Allah has obligated upon him has fulfilled what was upon him and has performed the gratitude for what Allah has bestowed upon him in his wealth, because of which he has praised Allah for the blessings from what He has favored him with of abundance over others and for what He has granted him success to pay what Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, has obligated upon him and has helped him.

✅ Pay close attention to what important rights exist in our wealth!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 551

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: Do you think that in wealth, there is only zakat alone?! What Allah has obligated in wealth besides zakat is more than (zakat)! From it you give to relatives and those who approach you and ask you!

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 7

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said to Ammar al-Sabati: O Ammar! Are you the owner of a lot of wealth? He said: Yes, may I be sacrificed for you! He said: Do you pay what Allah has obligated on you from zakat? He said: Yes! He said: Do you take out the known right from your wealth? He said: Yes! He said: Do you connect with your relatives? He said: Yes! The Imam said: O Ammar! Indeed, wealth perishes and the body decays, and the deed remains, and the rewarder is living and does not die! O Ammar! What you have sent forth does not precede you, and what you leave behind does not join you!

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 4, p. 14

In the hadith of prohibitions, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) forbade a person from withholding the ma'un of his neighbor and said: Whoever withholds the ma'un of his neighbor, Allah will withhold His goodness from him on the Day of Resurrection and will leave him to himself, and how bad will be the state of the one whom Allah leaves to himself!

📚 Amali al-Tusi, Vol. 2, p. 134

Imam Reza (peace be upon him) narrated from his ancestors that it was said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family): Is there a right in wealth other than zakat? He said: Yes! Kindness to a relative when he turns away and connecting with a Muslim neighbor! For he has not affirmed me who goes to bed full while his Muslim neighbor is hungry. Then he said: Jibril always commanded me about the neighbor to the point that I thought that he would soon make him an heir!

📚 Tafsir al-Ayyashi, Vol. 2, p. 209

Sam'ah said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, the Exalted and Glorified (in verse 21 of Surah Al-Ra'd) which says: 'And those who connect what Allah has commanded to be connected.' The Imam said: This is that which Allah has obligated in wealth besides zakat, and whoever pays what Allah has obligated upon him has fulfilled what was upon him.

Abu Basir said: We were with Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) and some of the owners of wealth were with us. So they brought up the topic of zakat. Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, the one who gives zakat is not praised for it, and this is an apparent thing by which his life is protected and by which he is called a Muslim, and if he does not pay it, no prayer is accepted from him, and there are certainly things upon you in your wealth other than zakat! I said: May Allah rectify your affairs! What is upon us in our wealth other than zakat?! The Imam said: Subhan Allah! Have you not heard that Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, says in His Book: 'And in their wealth there is a known right for the beggar and the deprived.' He said: I said: What is this known right that is upon us?! He said: It is something that a person does in his wealth, which he pays on a daily or weekly or monthly basis, whether it is little or a lot, as long as he is consistent in it.

And the saying of Allah, the Exalted and Glorified, which says: '...and they withhold ma'un.' He said: It is a loan that a person gives and a good deed that he performs and household utensils that he lends, and one of its cases is zakat. I said to the Imam: We have neighbors that when we lend them a commodity, they break and ruin it. Is there a sin upon us if we withhold it from them? The Imam said: No! If they are like this, there is no sin upon you to withhold it from them.

He said: I said: What about the verse (in verse 9 of Surah Al-Dahr) which says: 'And they give food out of love for Allah to the needy, the orphan, and the captive.'? He said: This is not from zakat!

I said: What about the saying of Allah, the Exalted and Glorified (in verse 273 of Surah Al-Baqarah) which says: 'Those who spend their wealth at night and day, secretly and openly.'? He said: This is also not from zakat!

He said: I said: What about the divine saying (in verse 270 of Surah Al-Baqarah) which says: 'If you disclose your charities, it is good, and if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you.'? He said: It is not from zakat, and your connecting with your relatives is also not from zakat!

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Kindness and a good deed are something other than zakat, so draw close to Allah with kindness, goodness, and connecting with relatives!

Aban ibn Taghlib said: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Do you think that Allah gave to a person because of his honor and dignity with Him, and withheld from a person because of his lowliness and humiliation with Him?! No! Rather, wealth is the wealth of Allah that He places as a trust and a deposit with a person, and He allows them to eat moderately from it and drink moderately and dress moderately and use it moderately for marriage and also ride moderate mounts, and to be benevolent with the rest to the poor believers and to fix their problems! So whoever does this, what he has eaten, drunk, ridden, and married is lawful, and whoever exceeds that, it is unlawful for him! Then the Imam said: Do not be extravagant! For He does not love the extravagant!

Do you think that if Allah entrusted a person with wealth that He gave him, he has the right to buy a horse for ten thousand dirhams while a horse for 20 dirhams is sufficient for him?! And to buy a female servant for a thousand dinars while one for 20 dinars is sufficient for him?! And he said: Do not be extravagant, for He does not love the extravagant!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 2, p. 668

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: He has not believed in me who goes to sleep full while his neighbor is hungry!

He said: There are no people of a city that a hungry person goes to bed in their midst and Allah looks at them on the Day of Resurrection!

✅ The many narrations about khums and the rights of poor Sayyids should also be noted in this regard.

✅ The above narrations are a small part of the financial rights that have been placed upon us and are different from zakat, and although today's money does not have the necessary conditions for the well-known zakat to be due on it, various and different other rights have been specified in the verses of the Quran and the narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) for wealth, and it is by paying them that a person has fulfilled what was upon him.

Therefore, one can never be inattentive to the other financial duties and rights that have been stated in the Quran and narrations due to the fact that the main zakat is not due on today's money.

What is there to prevent you from visiting the grave of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) five times every Friday or once a day?
