Question 2042: Can a person in ihram use an umbrella in Arafat, Mina, and other places?
✅ Answer: Consider the following narrations:
1⃣عن إسحاق بن عمار عن أَبِی الْحَسَن قال: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمُحْرِمِ یُظَلِّلُ عَلَیْهِ و هُوَ مُحْرِمٌ قَالَ لَا إِلَّا مَرِیضٌ أَوْ مَنْ بِهِ عِلَّةٌ وَ الَّذِی لَا یُطِیقُ الشَّمْس
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 309
Ishaq says: I asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) about a man in ihram who uses an umbrella or shade. The Imam said: No! Except for someone who is ill, has a condition, or cannot bear the sun!
2⃣عثمان بن عیسی الکلابی قال: قُلْتُ لِأَبِی الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلِ إِنَّ عَلِیَّ بْنَ شِهَابٍ یَشْکُو رَأْسَهُ وَ الْبَرْدُ شَدِیدٌ وَ یُرِیدُ أَنْ یُحْرِمَ فَقَالَ إِنْ کَانَ کَمَا زَعَمَ فَلْیُظَلِّلْ و أَمَّا أَنْتَ فَاضْحَ لِمَنْ أَحْرَمْتَ لَهُ

Uthman says: I said to Imam Kazim (peace be upon him): Ali ibn Shihab has a headache, the cold is severe, and he wants to enter ihram. The Imam said: If it is as he says, then let him use a shade, but you, for the one for whom you are in ihram, expose yourself and stay out from under the shade!
3⃣عن زرارة قال: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمُحْرِمِ أَ یَتَغَطَّی قَالَ أَمَّا مِنَ الْحَرِّ وَ الْبَرْدِ فَلَا

Zurarah says: I asked the Imam about a man in ihram using a cover. The Imam said: Not for heat or cold!
4⃣عَنْ عَبْداللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِیرَةِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِی الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلِ أُظَلِّلُ وَ أَنَا مُحْرِمٌ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ أَ فَأُظَلِّلُ وَ أُکَفِّرُ قَالَ لَا قُلْتُ فَإِنْ مَرِضْتُ قَالَ ظَلِّلْ وَ کَفِّرْ....

Abdullah ibn Mughira says: I said to Imam Kazim (peace be upon him): Can I use an umbrella or shade while in ihram? He said: No! I said: Can I use a shade and pay a penalty? He said: No! I said: What if I am ill? He said: Use an umbrella or shade and pay a penalty...!
5⃣عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِی الْحَسَنِ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمُحْرِمِ یُظَلِّلُ عَلَیْهِ وَ هُوَ مُحْرِمٌ قَالَ لَا إِلَّا مَرِیضٌ أَوْ مَنْ بِهِ عِلَّةٌ وَ الَّذِی لَا یُطِیقُ الشَّمْسَ

Ishaq ibn Ammar says: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person in ihram using an umbrella or shade. The Imam said: No! Except for someone who is ill, has a condition, or cannot bear the sun!
6⃣عَنْ إِسْمَاعِیلَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْخَالِقِ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ هَلْ یَسْتَتِرُ الْمُحْرِمُ مِنَ الشَّمْسِ فَقَالَ لَا إِلَّا أَنْ یَکُونَ شَیْخاً کَبِیراً أَوْ قَالَ ذَا عِلَّةٍ.
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 351
Ismail says: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Can a person in ihram cover themselves from the sun? He said: No! Unless they are an elderly person or have an illness!
7⃣عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ عَنْ أَبِی الْحَسَنِ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الظِّلَالِ لِلْمُحْرِمِ قَالَ لَا یُظَلِّلْ إِلَّا مِنْ عِلَّةِ مَرَضٍ.
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 351
Muhammad ibn Mansur says: I asked Imam Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) about an umbrella or shade for a person in ihram. The Imam said: They should not use an umbrella or shade, except due to illness!
8⃣عَنْ جَمِیلِ بْنِ دَرَّاجٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: لَا بَأْسَ بِالظِّلَالِ لِلنِّسَاءِ....
📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 5, p. 312
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: There is no issue for women to use an umbrella or shade...
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, a man in ihram cannot use a shade or canopy, such as an umbrella or similar, and this matter is clear in the narrations.
However, this ruling applies specifically to men, and there is no issue for women.
✅ Those who are ill, have a condition, or cannot bear the sun are permitted to use an umbrella or shade, though they are required to pay a penalty.
