Question 65: Is it permissible to use ethanol, which has been proven to be intoxicating, and other forbidden beverages for the treatment of diseases? What if it is part of a pharmaceutical composition?

✅Answer: Please consider the following narrations:

📚Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 414

Translation: Halabi said: I asked Imam Sadiq (AS) about a medicine that is mixed with wine and prepared; he said: No, by God, I do not even like to look at it, let alone use it for healing. Indeed, it is like pig fat or pig meat, and some people use it for healing.

📚Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 413

Translation: Umar ibn Udhaynah said: I wrote a letter to Imam Sadiq (AS) regarding a man who was prescribed a medicine for hemorrhoids and drank a small amount of Nabidh (fermented drink) without the intention of pleasure, only for treatment. I asked him about this. Imam replied: No, not even a single sip, and he said: Indeed, Allah (SWT) has not placed healing in anything that He has made forbidden.

📚Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 414

Translation: Qaid ibn Talhah asked Imam Sadiq (AS) about Nabidh being used in medicine. Imam said: No, it is not right for anyone to seek healing from what is forbidden.

Other narrations also state that it is not permissible to treat with forbidden drinks or foods, and if ethanol (which is intoxicating) or any other forbidden beverage is part of a pharmaceutical composition or consumed alone, it is strongly condemned in these narrations.
