Question 57: Can one perform good deeds on behalf of a living person, such as visiting holy sites, praying, or any other righteous act? Or can the reward of an action be gifted to a living person?
✅ Answer: For the deceased, all righteous deeds can be performed on their behalf, and rewards can be dedicated to them without any restrictions in the narrations, including:
📚 Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih, Vol. 1, Page 185
Translation: Imam Sadiq (AS) said: Prayers, fasting, Hajj, charity, good deeds, and supplications reach the deceased in their grave, and the reward is recorded for both the one who performs the act and the deceased.
✅ However, for the living, there are restrictions, and it is limited to specific cases mentioned in narrations:

Translation: Abdullah ibn Jundub wrote to Imam Kazim (AS), asking about a man who wishes to divide his acts of worship and good deeds into three parts: one-third for himself and two-thirds for his parents, or dedicate a specific voluntary act to one of them. What is the ruling? And what if one parent is alive and the other deceased? The Imam replied: For the deceased, it is a good and permissible act, but for the living, the only thing you can do is to show kindness and maintain ties with them.

Translation: Ismail narrated: I was with Imam Sadiq (AS) while his son Abdullah and another son were present. A man asked the Imam, 'May Allah improve your affairs. Can someone perform tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) on behalf of another person who is also in Mecca and has no issues preventing them from doing it themselves?' The Imam replied: 'No, if this were allowed, I would have instructed my son to perform tawaf on my behalf.' The Imam mentioned his younger son while both sons were listening.
However, some cases where acts on behalf of the living are permissible:
Performing tawaf and the prayer of tawaf on behalf of a living person residing in a city other than Mecca, as well as performing Hajj and Umrah on behalf of those not present in Mecca, as mentioned in 📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, Page 316.
Visiting Imam Hussein (AS) and other members of Ahlul Bayt (AS) on behalf of a living person, as mentioned in 📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 6, Page 45.
Any other specific cases explicitly mentioned in authentic and reliable narrations are permissible for the living; otherwise, they are not.
