Answer

📚 Al-Tahdhib Vol. 4, p. 261

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:

A fasting person can use a miswak (tooth-cleaning stick) at any time of the day he wishes.

📚 Al-Tahdhib Vol. 4, p. 262

Muhammad ibn Muslim said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a fasting person, when can he use a miswak? The Imam said: Whenever he wants to.

✅ In several narrations, with no conflicting reports, two of which were mentioned, permission has been given for a fasting person to brush their teeth at all times of the day.

✅ However, regarding a wet miswak, please pay attention to the following narration:

📚 Al-Tahdhib Vol. 4, p. 262

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:

A fasting person can use a miswak at any time of the day he wishes, but he does not use a wet stick...

✅ It is observed that in the above narration, using a wet and moist miswak is forbidden. However, also pay attention to the following permission in this regard:

📚 Al-Tahdhib Vol. 4, p. 262

Halabi said: I asked Abu Abdillah, Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Does a fasting person use a miswak with water and with a wet stick whose taste he can feel? He said: There is no problem.

✅ Considering the prohibition of a wet miswak for a fasting person in narration 3️⃣ and its permission in narration 4️⃣, the dislike (karaha) of using a wet miswak for a fasting person is established, and this point is stated in the following narration by the Imam (peace be upon him), and a solution for it is also mentioned: 👇

📚 Al-Kafi Vol. 4, p. 112

'Abdullah ibn Sinan said: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) considered it disliked for a fasting person to use a wet miswak, and he said: There is no harm in wetting his miswak with water, then shaking it until nothing remains on it.

✅ In the above narration, the dislike of using a wet and moist miswak is clear, and the Imam's solution (peace be upon him) for a person who has wet his miswak with water is to shake it until no water remains on it, and then the fasting person can brush with it. However, a dry miswak is completely permissible for a fasting person and there is no prohibition against it, and regarding a wet miswak, although permission has been given for a fasting person to use it, in order to remove the dislike mentioned in narration 5️⃣ and the prohibition in narration 3️⃣, the miswak should be shaken well so that nothing remains on it. Insha'Allah.

✅ For a fasting person, the use of toothpaste, salt, and other dental cleaners while brushing is not permitted in the narrations, and therefore, a fasting person must refrain from using any type of dental cleaner while brushing because what has been permitted is only the miswak.
