Question 454: What is the ruling for a fasting person regarding 'su'ut'?
Answer
✅Answer: 'Su'ut' refers to dripping oil or pulling medicine into the nose. In this regard, please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 4, p. 110
Layth al-Muradi says: I asked Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a fasting person who performs cupping and pours oil into his ear. The Imam said: There is no problem, except for 'su'ut' (i.e., pulling medicine into the nose), which is disliked.
✅The discussion of cupping for a fasting person has details that, God willing, will be discussed separately. As for dripping oil into the ear, please refer to question 452, the link for which will be mentioned at the end.
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 214
Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his father from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) that he considered 'su'ut' (i.e., pulling medicine and dripping oil into the nose) to be disliked for a fasting person.
✅In several narrations, two of which were mentioned,
'Su'ut', meaning dripping oil and pulling medicine and snuff into the nose, has been considered disliked, and in no narration has it been mentioned as being without problem with the phrase 'la ba'sa bihi' ('there is no problem with it'). Therefore, without claiming that it breaks the fast, according to the above narrations, we should refrain from doing this while fasting.
The ruling on dripping medicine and oil into the ear for a fasting person:
