Question 355: Is the audible recitation of Bismillah also in supererogatory prayers or is it specific to obligatory prayers?
Answer
✅ Answer: Please reflect on the following narrations:
📚 Khisal p. 604
Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in the hadith of the laws of religion: It is obligatory to recite Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim audibly and loudly in prayer.
📚 'Uyun Akhbar al-Reza Vol. 2, p. 123
Translation: Imam Reza (peace be upon him) said in his letter to Ma'mun (may Allah's curse be upon him): It is a tradition to recite Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim audibly and loudly in all prayers.
📚 'Uyun Akhbar al-Reza Vol. 2, p. 182
Translation: Raja' ibn Abi al-Dhahhak narrated that Imam Reza (peace be upon him) used to recite Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim loudly and audibly in all the prayers of the night and day.
📚 Amali Tusi Vol. 1, p. 279
Abu Hafs said: I prayed behind Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) and he recited Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim loudly and audibly.
📚 Kafi Vol. 3, p. 315
Translation: Safwan said: I prayed behind Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) for several days, and when it was a prayer that was not recited audibly (meaning it was the Dhuhr and 'Asr prayers), he would say Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim loudly and audibly, and in both surahs (meaning both in Al-Hamd and in the surah after Al-Hamd), he would recite Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim audibly and loudly.
📚 Tahdhib Vol. 2, p. 289
Translation: Hanan said: I prayed behind Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), and the Imam recited the ta'awwudh (he said 'A'udhu billahi min al-shaytan al-rajim') audibly and loudly, and then he also recited Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim audibly and loudly.
✅ As is clear from the above narrations, the audible and loud recitation of Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim is not specific to obligatory prayers, but is for prayer in general, and in all the prayers of the night and day, this noble verse, both in Surah Al-Hamd and in all the surahs that a person recites in the obligatory or supererogatory prayer after Surah Al-Hamd, is recited audibly and loudly.
✅ In the prayer that is recited as one or two rak'ahs to compensate for some doubts in prayer and is known today as 'Salat al-Ihtiyat,' Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim is also recited audibly, and there is no narrative evidence to exclude it. And those who have said that as a precaution, Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim in this 'Salat al-Ihtiyat' should be recited in a whisper have spoken contrary to the narrative texts. Therefore, in all the prayers of the night and day, Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim is recited audibly and loudly.
