1 عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ علیه السلام قَالَ: مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ یَحْضُرُهُ الْمَوْتُ إِلَّا وَکَّلَ بِهِ إِبْلِیسُ مِنْ شَیَاطِینِهِ مَنْ یَأْمُرُهُ بِالْکُفْرِ وَ یُشَکِّکُهُ فِی دِینِهِ حَتَّی تَخْرُجَ نَفْسُهُ فَمَنْ کَانَ مُؤْمِناً لَمْ یَقْدِرْ عَلَیْهِ فَإِذَا حَضَرْتُمْ مَوْتَاکُمْ فَلَقِّنُوهُمْ شَهَادَةَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَتَّی یَمُوتَ

وَ فِی رِوَایَةٍ أُخْرَی قَالَ: فَلَقِّنْهُ کَلِمَاتِ الْفَرَجِ وَ الشَّهَادَتَیْنِ وَ تُسَمِّی لَهُ الْإِقْرَارَ بِالْأَئِمَّةِ علیهم السلام وَاحِداً بَعْدَ وَاحِدٍ حَتَّی یَنْقَطِعَ عَنْهُ الْکَلَامُ

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 123

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'There is no one whose death approaches except that Iblis assigns one of his devils to him to command him to disbelief and to make him doubt in his religion until his soul leaves his body. So whoever is a believer, he (Iblis) will not have power over him. So when you are present with those who are dying, instruct them to say the testimony: 'There is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah' until he passes away.'

And in another hadith, he said: 'Instruct him with the words of 'faraj' and the two testimonies, and name the Imams (peace be upon them) for him, one after another, until his speech is cut off.'

Instructing a person who is dying

2 عَنْ أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ علیه السلام قَالَ: إِذَا دَخَلْتَ عَلَی مَرِیضٍ وَ هُوَ فِی النَّزْعِ الشَّدِیدِ فَقُلْ لَهُ ادْعُ بِهَذَا الدُّعَاءِ یُخَفِّفِ اللَّهُ عَنْکَ- وَ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِیمِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ الْکَرِیمِ مِنْ کُلِّ عِرْقٍ نَعَّارٍ وَ مِنْ شَرِّ حَرِّ النَّارِ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ لَقِّنْهُ کَلِمَاتِ الْفَرَجِ ثُمَّ حَوِّلْ وَجْهَهُ إِلَی مُصَلَّاهُ الَّذِی کَانَ یُصَلِّی فِیهِ فَإِنَّهُ یُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُ وَ یُسَهَّلُ أَمْرُهُ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ

📚 Tibb al-A'immah, p. 118

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'When you enter upon a sick person and he is in a state of severe agony, tell him to recite this supplication seven times so that Allah may ease it for you:'

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِیمِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ الْکَرِیمِ مِنْ کُلِّ عِرْقٍ نَعَّارٍ وَ مِنْ شَرِّ حَرِّ النَّارِ

Then instruct him with the words of 'faraj' and turn his face toward the place of his prayer where he used to pray, for indeed it will be eased for him and his matter will be made easy with the permission of Allah.

3 عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: لَقَّنَنِی عَلِیُّ بْنُ أَبِی طَالِب کَلِمَاتِ الْفَرَج و أَخْبَرَنِی أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلی الله علیه و آله لَقَّنَهُنَّ إِیَّاهُ وَ أَمَرَهُ إِذَا نَزَلَ بِهِ کَرْبٌ أَوْ شِدَّةٌ أَنْ یَقُولَهُنَّ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْحَلِیمُ الْکَرِیمُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَلِیُّ الْعَظِیمُ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَ تَبَارَکَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِیمِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِینَ

📚 Amali al-Tusi, vol. 2, p. 235

Translation: 'Abdullah ibn Ja'far said: ''Ali (peace be upon him) instructed me with the words of 'faraj' and informed me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught them to him and commanded him to say them when a trial or hardship befell him, (and those words are):'

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْحَلِیمُ الْکَرِیمُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَلِیُّ الْعَظِیمُ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَ تَبَارَکَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِیمِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِینَ

4 زرَارة عَنْ أَبِی جعفرقَالَ: إِذَا أَدْرَکْتَ الرَّجُلَ عِنْدَ النَّزْعِ فَلَقِّنْهُ کَلِمَاتِ الْفَرَجِ- لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْحَلِیمُ الْکَرِیمُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَلِیُّ الْعَظِیمُ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ و رَبِّ الْأَرَضِینَ السَّبْعِ وَ مَا فِیهِنَّ و مَا بَیْنَهُنَّ و مَا تَحْتَهُنَّ وَ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِیمِ و الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِینَ

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'When you find a person in the agony of death, instruct him with the words of 'faraj':'

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْحَلِیمُ الْکَرِیمُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَلِیُّ الْعَظِیمُ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَ رَبِّ الْأَرَضِینَ السَّبْعِ وَ مَا فِیهِنَّ وَ مَا بَیْنَهُنَّ وَ مَا تَحْتَهُنَّ وَ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِیمِ وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمِینَ
