Question 2075: If a child pulls a woman's chador (full-body covering) during prayer, and the woman adjusts the chador and continues her prayer, is her prayer valid?

Answer
✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 372
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'A woman prays in a (long) woman's garment and a maqna'ah (headscarf), provided that it is densely woven, meaning it is covering!'
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 373
Yunus ibn Ya'qub asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a man who prays in one garment; he replied: 'Yes.' I said: 'What about a woman?' He said: 'No, and it is not proper for a free woman, if she has menstruated, to pray in anything other than a khimar (head covering and scarf) unless she cannot find one!'
📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 2, p. 217
Imam Kadhim (peace be upon him) said: 'It is not obligatory for slave girls to cover their heads in prayer, and it is not proper for a (free) woman to pray unless she is in two garments.'
📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 2, p. 218
Jamil said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a woman who prays in a long woman's garment and a headscarf; the Imam said: 'She should also have a milhafah (a wrap or chador) to gather herself and wrap herself in!'
📚 Al-Ja'fariyat, p. 41
Ali (peace be upon him) said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'The prayer of a young girl who has menstruated is not accepted unless she covers her head, and the prayer of a woman is not accepted until she covers her ears and the top of her chest!'
📚 Khisal, p. 284
Imam Baqir (salutations of Allah be upon him) said: 'Prayer is not invalidated except by five things: purity (Wudu, Ghusl, Tayammum), time, qibla, bowing (ruku'), and prostration (sujud)!'
Then the Imam said: 'Recitation is a sunnah, tashahhud is a sunnah, and takbir is a sunnah, and a sunnah does not invalidate a fard (obligatory act)!'
📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 2, p. 241
Zurarah said: 'I asked Imam Baqir (salutations of Allah be upon him) about the obligatory acts (fara'id) in prayer; the Imam said: 'Time, purity (wudu or ghusl or tayammum), qibla, intention (takbirat al-ihram), bowing (ruku'), prostration (sujud), and supplication (du'a).'
I said: 'What about other things?' He said: 'They are sunnah in the fard (or the obligatory sunnah)!'
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, for free women in prayer, at least two coverings are necessary:
1. Maqna'ah or headscarf and something that covers the head, neck, ears, and throat.
2. A long Arabian garment that reaches the ankle bone on the foot.
✅ Of course, in addition to the two coverings above, in narration 4 , it is recommended that women in prayer also wear a milhafah or chador that encompasses and covers all of these.
✅ Having the above covering, although not a fard (obligatory act), is one of the obligatory sunnahs of prayer, and its intentional omission invalidates the prayer.
✅ If a woman is praying and a child pulls her chador, and the woman has a maqna'ah and headscarf, there is no problem with her prayer.
However, if she does not have a maqna'ah or head covering, she should quickly put her chador back on her head and continue her prayer.
However, since the woman's covering in prayer is not a fard but an obligatory sunnah, and this removal of the covering happened unintentionally and was not deliberate, it does not invalidate the prayer or necessitate its repetition, and her prayer is valid. This is because, according to narration 6 , the unintentional omission of an obligatory sunnah does not invalidate a fard.
