Question 2074: If the pure bodies of the infallible Imams are not in their graves, why are people visiting and honoring those places for worship?

1 عَنْ عَطِيَّةَ اَلْأَبْزَارِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ يَقُولُ: لاَ تَمْكُثُ جُثَّةُ نَبِيٍّ وَ لاَ وَصِيِّ نَبِيٍّ فِي اَلْأَرْضِ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً.

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 6, p. 106

Atiyyah said: I heard Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: The body of a Prophet and the successor of a Prophet does not remain on earth for more than forty days!

2 عَنْ عَبْداللَّهِ بْنِ بکیر قَالَ: حَجَجْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فِي حَدِيثٍ طَوِيلٍ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ لَوْ نُبِشَ قَبْرُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ هَلْ كَانَ يُصَابُ فِي قَبْرِهِ شَيْءٌ فَقَالَ يَا ابْنَ بکیر مَا أَعْظَمَ مَسْأَلَتَكَ إِنَّ الْحُسَيْنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ مَعَ أَبِيهِ وَ أُمِّهِ وَ أَخِيهِ فِي مَنْزِلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَ مَعَهُ يُرْزَقُونَ وَ يُحْبَرُونَ وَ إِنَّهُ لَعَنْ يَمِينِ الْعَرْشِ مُتَعَلِّقٌ بِهِ يَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ أَنْجِزْ لِي مَا وَعَدْتَنِي وَ إِنَّهُ لَيَنْظُرُ إِلَى زُوَّارِهِ فَهُوَ أَعْرَفُ بِهِمْ و بأسمائهم وَ أَسْمَاءِ آبَائِهِمْ وَ مَا فِي رِحَالِهِمْ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمْ بِوُلْدِهِ الْخَبَرَ

In a hadith, Abdullah ibn Bukayr said: I performed Hajj with Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him). So I said to him: O son of the Messenger of God! If the grave of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) were to be excavated, would anything be found in his grave?! The Imam said: O son of Bukayr! How great is your request! Indeed, Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him), along with his father, his mother, and his brother, is in the house of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) and they eat and travel with him, and indeed he is on the right side of the Throne and belongs to it and says: O God! Fulfill the promise you made to me!

And indeed, he looks at his visitors and is more aware of them and their names and the names of their fathers and what is in their houses than one of them is aware of his own child...!

3 عن عَمْرِو بْنِ الْیَسَعِ قال: جَاءَنِی سَعْدٌ الْإِسْكَافُ فَقَالَ یَا بُنَیَّ تَحْمِلُ الْحَدِیثَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ حَدَّثَنِی أَبُو عَبْداللَّهِ علیه السلام قَالَ لَمَّا أُصِیبَ أَمِیرالْمُؤْمِنِینَ علیه السلام قَال لِلْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَیْنِ علیهما السلام غَسِّلَانِی وَ كَفِّنَانِی وَ حَنِّطَانِی وَ احْمِلَانِی عَلَی سَرِیرِی وَ احْمِلَا مُؤَخَّرَهُ تُكْفَیَانِ مُقَدَّمَهُ....فَإِنَّكُمَا تَنْتَهِیَانِ إِلَی قَبْرٍ مَحْفُورٍ وَ لَحْدٍ مَلْحُودٍ وَ لَبِنٍ موضوع فَأَلْحِدَانِی وَ أَشْرِجَا عَلَیَّ اللَّبِنَ وَ ارْفَعَا لَبِنَةً مِمَّا عِنْدَ رَأْسِی فَانْظُرَا مَا تَسْمَعَانِ فَأَخَذَا اللَّبِنَةَ مِنْ عِنْدِ الرَّأْسِ بَعْدَ مَا أَشْرَجَا عَلَیْهِ اللَّبِنَ فَإِذاً لَیْسَ في الْقَبْرِ شَیْءٌ وَ إِذَا هَاتِفٌ یَهْتِفُ أَنَّ أَمِیرُ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ علیه السلام كَانَ عَبْداً صَالِحاً فَأَلْحَقَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّوَجَلَّ بِنَبِیِّهِ صلی اللّٰه علیه و آله وَ كَذَلِكَ یَفْعَلُ بِالْأَوْصِیَاءِ بَعْدَ الْأَنْبِیَاءِ حَتَّی لَوْ أَنَّ نَبِیّاً مَاتَ فِی الشَّرْقِ وَ مَاتَ وَصِیُّهُ فِی الْغَرْبِ أَلْحَقَ اللَّهُ الْوَصِیَّ بِالنَّبِیِ

Amr ibn Yas' said: Sa'd al-Iskafi came to me and said: O my son! Can you bear a hadith?! I said: Yes! So he said: Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated to me that when the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) was struck, he said to Imam Hassan and Imam Hussein (peace be upon them): Wash me and shroud me and anoint me with balm and carry me on a coffin and you should carry the back of the coffin on your shoulders and you will be sufficient for the front of the coffin... and indeed you will reach a dug grave and a prepared niche and placed bricks. So place me in the niche and arrange the bricks next to each other on the niche, and then take one of the bricks that is near my head and look at what you hear!

So after arranging the bricks, they removed one brick from above the head of the Master and suddenly they saw that there was nothing in the grave and a caller cried out: Indeed, the Commander of the Faithful was a righteous man and God Almighty has joined him to His Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) and He does the same with all the successors after the Prophets, to the extent that if a Prophet dies in the east and his successor dies in the west, He joins the successor to the Prophet!

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَی مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَجِّلْ لِوَلِیِّکَ الْفَرَجَ و الْعَافِیَةَ و النَّصْر

4 عَنْ زِیَادِ بْنِ أَبِی الْحَلَّالِ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (علیه السلام) قَالَ: مَا مِنْ نَبِیٍّ وَ لَا وَصِیِّ نَبِیٍّ یَبْقَی فِی الْأَرْضِ أَکْثَرَ مِنْ ثَلَاثَةِ أَیَّامٍ حَتَّی تُرْفَعَ رُوحُهُ وَ عَظْمُهُ وَ لَحْمُهُ إِلَی السَّمَاءِ وَ إِنَّمَا تُؤْتَی مَوَاضِعُ آثَارِهِمْ وَ یُبَلِّغُونَهُمْ مِنْ بَعِیدٍ السَّلَامَ وَ یُسْمِعُونَهُمْ فِی مَوَاضِعِ آثَارِهِمْ مِنْ قَرِیبٍ.

Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: No Prophet or successor of a Prophet remains on earth for more than three days until his spirit and his bones and his flesh are raised to the heaven, and indeed their vestiges are visited and greetings are conveyed to them from a distance and from a close distance at the places of their vestiges, the greetings are made audible to them!

5 عَنْ عَبْداللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْداللَّه قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ یَقُولُ قَبْرُ الْحُسَیْنِ عِشْرُونَ ذِرَاعاً مُکَسَّراً رَوْضَةٌ مِنْ رِیَاضِ الْجَنَّةِ.

Abdullah ibn Sinan said: I heard Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: The grave of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) is a garden from the gardens of Paradise, 20 cubits by 20 cubits!

6 عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِیِّ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ أَبِی الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا قَالَ: إِنَّ بِخُرَاسَانَ لَبُقْعَةً یَأْتِی عَلَیْهَا زَمَانٌ تَصِیرُ مُخْتَلَفَ الْمَلَائِکَةِ فَلَا یَزَالُ فَوْجٌ یَنْزِلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ وَ فَوْجٌ یَصْعَدُ إِلَی أَنْ یُنْفَخَ فِی الصُّورِ فَقِیلَ لَهُ وَ أَیَّةُ بُقْعَةٍ هَذِهِ فَقَالَ هِیَ بِأَرْضِ طُوسَ وَ هِیَ وَ اللَّهِ رَوْضَةٌ مِنْ رِیَاضِ الْجَنَّةِ مَنْ زَارَنِی فِی تِلْکَ الْبُقْعَةِ کَانَ کَمَنْ زَارَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَ کَتَبَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَی لَهُ ثَوَابَ أَلْفِ حَجَّةٍ مَبْرُورَةٍ وَ أَلْفِ عُمْرَةٍ مَقْبُولَةٍ وَ کُنْتُ أَنَا وَ آبَائِی شُفَعَاءَهُ یَوْمَ الْقِیَامَةِ.

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 585

Imam Reza (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, there is a land in Khorasan that a time will come when it will become a place of transit for angels and a group will always descend from the heaven and a group will ascend to the heaven until the trumpet is blown. They asked him: Where is this land? He said: It is in the land of Tus and by God it is a garden from the gardens of Paradise. Whoever visits me in that place is like one who has visited the Prophet and God will write for him the reward of a thousand accepted Hajj and a thousand accepted Umrah and I and my fathers will be his intercessors on the Day of Judgment!

7 قَالَ وَ رُوِیَ أَنَّ الصَّادِقَ مَرِضَ فَأَمَرَ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ أَنْ یَسْتَأْجِرُوا لَهُ أَجِیراً یَدْعُو لَهُ عِنْدَ قَبْرِ الْحُسَیْنِ فَوَجَدُوا رَجُلًا فَقَالُوا لَهُ ذَلِکَ فَقَالَ أَنَا أَمْضِی وَ لَکِنَّ الْحُسَیْنَ إِمَامٌ مُفْتَرَضُ الطَّاعَةِ وَ هُوَ إِمَامٌ مُفْتَرَضُ الطَّاعَةِ فَرَجَعُوا إِلَی الصَّادِقِ وَ أَخْبَرُوهُ فَقَالَ هُوَ کَمَا قَالَ وَ لَکِنْ أَ مَا عَرَفَ أَنَّ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَی بِقَاعاً یُسْتَجَابُ فِیهَا الدُّعَاءُ فَتِلْکَ الْبُقْعَةُ مِنْ تِلْکَ الْبِقَاعِ.

It is narrated that Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) became ill and commanded those who were with him to hire a person to pray for him near the grave of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him)!

So they found a person and told him that. He said: I will go but he (meaning Hussein, peace be upon him) is an Imam whose obedience is obligatory and he (meaning Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him) is also an Imam whose obedience is obligatory!

They returned to the Imam and reported that saying. The Imam said: It is as he says, but does he not know that God Almighty has lands in which prayers are answered and that piece of land (meaning under the dome of Hussein) is one of those lands!

✅ According to the above narrations and others, the pure body of the successors of the Prophets and the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them all), immediately after burial or at most three days or at most forty days after burial, is joined with the Prophet whose successor he was and does not remain in the grave!

However, the graves of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them all) are the places of their vestiges where one can greet them from a close distance.

Also, their graves are a garden from the gardens of Paradise and a place of worship and a place where prayers are answered and other abundant blessings.

Therefore, although the bodies of the successors are joined with the Prophets, for the above reasons and others, their graves are visited and prayers and worship are performed near their graves and their graves are honored.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَی مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَجِّلْ لِوَلِیِّکَ الْفَرَجَ وَ الْعَافِیَةَ وَ النَّصْر
