Question 2052: Is it permissible to buy, sell, gift, receive, and use second-hand and old clothing? It is said that someone might be bewitched using a worn shirt!
✅ Answer: Please consider the following narrations:
📚 Qurb al-Isnad, p. 157
Imam Reza (peace be upon him) said in a narration: Indeed, Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) used to wear a fur cloak worth 500 dirhams and a fur robe worth 50 dinars, and he would spend the winter in them. When winter ended, he would sell them and give the money as charity!

Bazanti said: I asked the Imam (peace be upon him) about someone who buys second-hand and used clothes from the market and does not know who it belonged to. Is it valid to pray in them? The Imam replied: If he bought it from a Muslim, then he may pray in it. If he bought it from a Christian, he should not wear it or pray in it until he washes it!

Ismail ibn Ali said: Imam Reza (peace be upon him) gave a fur shirt to D’ibl and told him: Preserve this shirt, for I have prayed one thousand rak’ahs every night for a thousand nights in it, and I have completed the Qur’an in it a thousand times!
✅ Buying, selling, gifting, receiving, and using second-hand and worn clothing is not prohibited in Shi’a narrations. Moreover, the various hadith examples mentioned above show that there is no objection to dealing in second-hand clothing.
