Question 2041: How much of the body must the izaar of a person in ihram cover?

✅ Answer: Consider the following narrations:

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 501

Bashir Nabbal says: I asked Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) about the bathhouse. The Imam said: Are you intending to go to the bathhouse? I said: Yes! So he ordered the water to be heated, then entered, wearing an izaar that covered his knees and navel, and said: Do it like this!

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 3, p. 263

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: Exposing the navel, thigh, or knee in the mosque is considered part of the private parts!

📚 Al-Khisal, p. 630

Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said: A man has no right to lift his clothing above his thigh and sit among people!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 455

Mu'alla says: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) was among you (in Kufa). He came to Bani Diwan and bought three garments for one dinar: a shirt reaching above the ankle bone, an izaar reaching halfway down the shin, and a cloak covering the chest in front and the hips in the back.

Then he raised his hands to the sky, constantly praising Allah for what He had clothed him with until he entered his home. Then he said: This is the clothing that Muslims should wear...!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 456

Abdullah ibn Hilal says: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) ordered me to buy an izaar for him. I said: I can only find a wide and large izaar! The Imam said: Cut it and hem its edges!

Then he said: Indeed, my father said: Whatever extends beyond the ankle bone is in the Fire!

📚 Al-Ihtijaj, p. 485

In a narration, Himyari says that Imam al-Mahdi (peace be upon him) answered his question regarding the izaar of a person in ihram: It is permissible for a person to wear their izaar however they wish, as long as they do not alter it with scissors or needles in a way that changes it from being an izaar, and they tuck the edges into the izaar itself without tying it, and do not tie one part to another, provided it covers the navel and both knees. For the unanimously agreed-upon tradition without disagreement is to cover the navel and both knees!

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, the minimum requirement for the izaar of a person in ihram or otherwise is that it fully covers the navel and both knees. The usual length is halfway down the shin, and at most, it may reach just above the ankle bone on the foot. A person in ihram or otherwise has no right to expose their knees, thighs, or navel, especially in the mosque. Therefore, respected pilgrims must ensure they have the necessary lower body covering.
