✅ Answer: Consider the following narrations:

1⃣عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو وَ أَنَسِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ آبَائِهِ فِی وَصِیَّةِ النَّبِیِّ لِعَلِیٍّ قَالَ: یَا عَلِیُّ إِنَّ عَبْدَ الْمُطَّلِبِ سَنَّ فِی الْجَاهِلِیَّةِ خَمْسَ سُنَنٍ أَجْرَاهَا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ لَهُ فِی الْإِسْلَامِ حَرَّمَ نِسَاءَ الْآبَاءِ عَلَی الْأَبْنَاءِ إِلَی أَنْ قَالَ وَ لَمْ یَکُنْ لِلطَّوَافِ عَدَدٌ عِنْدَ قُرَیْشٍ فَسَنَّ لَهُمْ عَبْدُ الْمُطَّلِبِ سَبْعَةَ أَشْوَاطٍ فَأَجْرَی اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ذَلِکَ فِی الْإِسْلَامِ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his forefathers that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said in his will to Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him): O Ali! Indeed, Abdul Muttalib established five traditions during the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) that Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, made current in Islam: He prohibited the women of fathers to their sons... and he continued until he said: And among the Quraysh, there was no fixed number for tawaf, so Abdul Muttalib established seven rounds as a tradition for them, and Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, made it current in Islam!

2⃣عَنْ أَبِی حَمْزَةَ الثُّمَالِیِّ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ الْحُسَیْن قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِمَ صَارَ الطَّوَافُ سَبْعَةَ أَشْوَاطٍ قَالَ لِإِنَّ اللَّهَ تبارک و تعالی قَالَ لِلْمَلَائِکَةِ إِنِّی جاعِلٌ فِی الْأَرْضِ خَلِیفَةً فَرَدُّوا عَلَیْهِ وَ قَالُوا أَ تَجْعَلُ فِیها مَنْ یُفْسِدُ فِیها وَ یَسْفِکُ الدِّماءَ قَالَ اللَّه إِنِّی أَعْلَمُ ما لا تَعْلَمُونَ وَ کَانَ لَا یَحْجُبُهُمْ عَنْ نُورِهِ فَحَجَبَهُمْ عَنْ نُورِهِ سَبْعَةَ آلَافِ عَامٍ فَلَاذُوا بِالْعَرْشِ سَبْعَةَ آلَافِ سَنَةٍ فَرَحِمَهُمْ وَ تَابَ عَلَیْهِمْ وَ جَعَلَ لَهُمُ الْبَیْتَ الْمَعْمُورَ فِی السَّمَاءِ الرَّابِعَةِ وَ جَعَلَهُ مَثَابَةً وَ وَضَعَ الْبَیْتَ الْحَرَامَ تَحْتَ الْبَیْتِ الْمَعْمُورِ وَ جَعَلَهُ مَثَابَةً لِلنَّاسِ وَ أَمْناً فَصَارَ الطَّوَافُ سَبْعَةَ أَشْوَاطٍ وَاجِباً عَلَی الْعِبَادِ لِکُلِّ أَلْفِ سَنَةٍ شَوْطاً وَاحِداً.

Abu Hamza Thumali says: I asked Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him): Why was tawaf set to seven rounds? The Imam said: When Allah, the Exalted, said to the angels: I am placing a vicegerent on earth, they said: Will You place therein one who will cause corruption and shed blood? Allah said: I know what you do not know! (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 30). Until that moment, Allah had not veiled His light from them, but He veiled them from His light for seven thousand years, so they sought refuge at the Throne for seven thousand years! Then Allah had mercy on them, accepted their repentance, and placed the Bayt al-Ma'mur in the fourth heaven for them, making it a place of gathering. He placed Bayt Allah al-Haram beneath Bayt al-Ma'mur, making it a place of gathering and security for people. Hence, tawaf of seven rounds was made obligatory for the servants: one round for each thousand years!

✅ In the terminology of jurisprudence and narrations, tawaf refers to circling the Kaaba with specific etiquettes, and in all narrational sources, it consists of seven rounds. Whether for obligatory or supererogatory tawaf, the completion of seven rounds is necessary for it to be considered valid tawaf and to receive its reward. No specific name or reward has been mentioned for circling the Kaaba one, two, or fewer than seven complete rounds.

✅ Therefore, those who claim that one or two rounds of recommended tawaf can be performed for oneself or as a gift for others and consider it rewardable have no narrational evidence, have spoken against the tradition, and have introduced an innovation.

✅ Of course, performing tawaf with fewer than seven rounds can be argued through personal reasoning and opinion, and its proponents follow such views!!! However, these opinions are of no use to the people of hadith and do not benefit them. The people of hadith, if they wish to perform recommended tawaf for themselves or on behalf of others, do so in accordance with the tradition, completing seven rounds.
