Question 2012: Can someone who intends to travel in the morning during Ramadan break their fast before embarking on the journey?
✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 127
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: When a person sets out on a journey during Ramadan, he may break his fast. He said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, set out from Medina toward Mecca during Ramadan, accompanied by people, including those on foot. When they reached Kura’ Ghamim (a place between Mecca and Medina), between noon and afternoon, he asked for a container of water, drank it, and broke his fast. Then the people with him also broke their fast!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 525
Zurara, Muhammad, and Muslim say: Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Whoever owns wealth upon which a year has passed must pay its zakat. I said: What if he gifts it a month or a day before its due time? He said: Nothing is ever incumbent upon him!
And Zurara narrated from him that he said: This is like someone who breaks his fast during a day of his residence in Ramadan and then sets out on a journey at the end of the day, intending to nullify the expiation that became obligatory upon him!
He said: When he sees the crescent of the twelfth month, zakat becomes obligatory upon him, but if he gifts it before that, it is permissible, and nothing is incumbent upon him, just like someone who travels and then breaks his fast...
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, a person does not have the right to break their fast in Ramadan while still residing in their hometown, even if they intend to travel that same morning.
✅ The permitted time for breaking the fast is the well-known limit called the 'distance of permissibility' (hadd al-tarakkhus), the narrations of which can be found in the link below:

✅ Therefore, a traveler who intentionally breaks their fast while still in their hometown is obligated to make up the fast (qada) and pay expiation (kaffara).
✅ However, if the person was ignorant of this ruling and broke their fast, based on the principle below, they are not liable for expiation and only need to make up the fast:

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said in a narration: Whoever does something out of ignorance has no obligation upon him!
