Question 2001: Is eating garlic discouraged (makruh)?
✅ Answer: Please consider the following narrations:
📚Al-Mahasin, p. 523
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: Indeed, we eat onions and garlic!
📚Qurb al-Isnad, p. 116
Ali bin Ja‘far said: I asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) about garlic and onions when used in medicine before being cooked; the Imam said: There is no issue!
And I asked him about eating garlic and onions with vinegar (pickled garlic and pickled onions); the Imam said: There is no issue!
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 374
Muhammad bin Muslim said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about eating garlic; the Imam said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prohibited it because of its odor and said: Whoever eats this foul-smelling vegetable should not come near our mosque, but if someone eats it and does not come to the mosque, there is no issue!
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 375
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) was asked about eating garlic, onions, and leeks; the Imam said: Eating them semi-cooked and in stews is not an issue, and there is no problem in using garlic for treatment, but if any of you eats it, he should not go to the mosque!
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 375
Hassan Zayyat said: When I completed the Hajj rituals, I passed through Medina and inquired about Imam Baqir (peace be upon him). I was told he was in the region of Yanbu‘. So I went to Yanbu‘, and the Imam said to me: You came here on foot! I replied: Yes, may I be sacrificed for you! I did not want to leave without seeing you! The Imam said: I have eaten this vegetable, meaning garlic, and I intended to stay away from the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
📚Makarim al-Akhlaq, p. 182
Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: O Ali! Eat garlic! If I did not converse with the angels, I would certainly eat it!
📚Makarim al-Akhlaq, p. 182
Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Eat garlic and use it as a remedy, for it contains a cure for seventy illnesses!
8⃣ In the *Risalah Dhahabiyyah*, which is attributed to Imam Ridha (peace be upon him), it is mentioned: Whoever wants to prevent wind (gas/bloating) in their body should eat garlic once every seven days!
📚Al-Risalah al-Dhahabiyyah, p. 41
✅ From the above narrations and others, it is clear that the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them) themselves ate garlic and recommended it for medicinal and non-medicinal use, whether as pickled garlic, semi-cooked, or fully cooked. They only advised that if someone eats it, they should not go to the mosque so that its odor does not disturb others. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) refrained from eating it only because of his conversations with the angels.
Thus, eating garlic is not inherently makruh (discouraged) or condemned; rather, the only concern is its smell, which imposes certain responsibilities on the one who eats it.
✅ The narration in *Al-Tahdhib*, Vol. 9, p. 96, which states that as long as a person eats garlic, they must repeat their prayer, is an isolated (shadh) hadith, and its knowledge is referred to Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him).
