Question 1997: If a man and a woman get married, can the children from their previous marriages marry each other?
✅ Answer: Please consider the following verses and narrations:
Translation: Forbidden to you (for marriage) are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts, the daughters of your brother, the daughters of your sister, your foster mothers who have nursed you, your foster sisters, the mothers of your wives, and your stepdaughters under your guardianship from wives with whom you have consummated the marriage—but if you have not consummated the marriage, then there is no sin upon you (to marry them). (Also forbidden are) the wives of your own sons who are from your own loins, and (it is forbidden) to take two sisters (in marriage) simultaneously—except for what has already occurred. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
And (also forbidden are) married women—except those whom your right hands possess (captives of war). This is Allah’s decree for you. And lawful for you are (all others) beyond these, provided you seek them (in marriage) with your wealth in a legal marriage, not in fornication...
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 475
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: What makes marriage forbidden due to lineage also makes it forbidden due to breastfeeding (foster relationships).
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 424
Abi Jarir Qummi said: I asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him): Can I marry my maternal brother to my paternal sister? The Imam said: Marry that girl to that boy, or he said: Marry that boy to that girl!
✅ Based on verses 23 and 24 of Surah An-Nisa and various narrations, the categories of women forbidden for marriage have been clearly stated, along with their extensions and subcategories. This has established a specific and limited list of prohibited marriages, while all other marriages are permissible as long as the necessary conditions are met.
An examination of these verses and narrations that outline forbidden marriages—whether through general principles or specific cases—along with consideration of narrations like Hadith 2⃣, shows that if a man and a woman, each having children from previous marriages, marry each other, their respective children are not restricted from marrying each other. The daughters of one can marry the sons of the other because there is no legal or biological relationship between them that would prohibit marriage. The marriage of one's father to the other's mother does not establish a kinship bond that would make marriage between them forbidden.
