Question 1994: If someone eats at dawn, thinking that Fajr has not yet arrived, and then realizes they ate after Fajr, can they continue fasting as a voluntary or makeup fast?
✅ Answer: Refer to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 96
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) was asked about a person who eats suhoor (pre-dawn meal) during Ramadan and then leaves their room to find that Fajr has already arrived and it is bright outside. He said: 'They must complete their fast but also make up for that day!'
However, if outside of Ramadan, they eat suhoor after Fajr, they must break their fast.
He then said: 'One night, my father was praying while I was eating. After finishing his prayer, he said: "Ja‘far is eating and drinking after Fajr has risen!" So he instructed me to break my fast that day since it was outside of Ramadan.'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 97
Ishaq ibn Ammar said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): I have one or two missed fasts from Ramadan, and I eat suhoor after Fajr unknowingly. Should I break my fast and make up for that day later, or should I complete the fast and also fast another day as compensation?' The Imam replied: 'No! You must break your fast and make up for that day later because you ate after Fajr had arrived.'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 97
Ali ibn Abi Hamza said: 'I asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) about someone who unknowingly drinks water after Fajr during Ramadan. The Imam said: "They must complete the fast and also make up for it with another day. But if this happens with a makeup fast for Ramadan, whether in Shawwal or any other month, they must break their fast and make it up later."'
✅ Based on the above narrations, if someone outside of Ramadan mistakenly eats or drinks after Fajr, thinking it has not yet arrived, they cannot continue fasting as a voluntary or makeup fast. They must break their fast.
✅ The ruling differs for cases occurring in Ramadan. Related hadiths can be found at the link below:
