Question 1971: In our neighborhood, someone annually offers food on the anniversary of the first and second usurpers of the caliphate and on Unity Day. Is it permissible to eat this food?

✅ Answer: Refer to the following narrations:

📚 Amal Al-Tusi, Vol. 2, p. 231

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: Actions are based on intentions, and everyone will have what they intended. Whoever strives for what is with Allah, their reward is with Allah. And whoever strives for worldly gain or the reins of a camel, they will have only what they intended!

📚 Nahj al-Balagha

News reached Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) that Sahl ibn Hunayf, his governor of Basra, had attended a banquet held by a group of Basrans. Amir al-Mu'minin wrote to him: O son of Hunayf! I have heard that a young man from Basra invited you to a meal, and you hastened to it. Different dishes were served to you. I did not expect you to accept the food of people who neglected to invite the poor and invited only the wealthy. Be cautious about what you chew and eat. If you are uncertain about its purity, spit it out. Eat only what you are sure is pure and permissible!

📚 Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 77, p. 84

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said to Abu Dharr: O Abu Dharr! Only associate with believers, and let only pious people eat your food. Do not eat the food of the corrupt!

4⃣ In a narration, Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) addressed someone who brought him a covered dish at night as a gift to gain his favor: 'May women who lose their children mourn over you! Do you think you can deceive me with a concoction mixed with sweetness and yellow halwa made from date syrup? Are you insane or delirious? Do you not realize that even actions as small as a mustard seed are questioned? What should I say about this mixture you brought for me to eat?'

✅ From the above narrations, it is clear that aside from the necessity of the food being halal, one must also consider the intention behind its preparation and the character of the person providing it. Food offered to commemorate events like the usurpation of the caliphate or similar matters should not be eaten, especially since those offering such food are undoubtedly corrupt. Eating the food of corrupt individuals is explicitly prohibited!
