Question 286: What is the ruling on tattoos, microblading, and micropigmentation?
Answer
✅Answer: Tattooing is the same as what has been customary since ancient times, and its general process is that by means of needles and other special sharp objects, things such as indigo, soot, kohl, ink, or other materials are injected under the skin for decoration and so on, to create designs.
This practice has progressed over time and has taken on more advanced forms. For example, the depth of injection of these materials, the type of injected materials, and the quality of pushing these materials under the skin have changed over time, but all these changes have not been anything that would take it out of being 'washa' and 'tattooing'. Therefore, new forms of tattooing, because of some side differences, are called by new names such as: microblading, feathering, micropigmentation, and so on, and since the basis of all these is the injection of different materials under the skin in different parts of the body, they are in fact a clear example of 'washa', which, of course, is used more today for the decoration of women in places like eyebrows and around the lips, and so on.
In terms of language, the woman who performs the act of tattooing on others is called 'waashimah', and the woman on whom this is done is called 'mustawshimah', and the act itself is called 'washm'.
Apart from the harms that this act has from a medical point of view, in order to explain its ruling from the perspective of narrations, pay attention to the following two hadiths:
📚 Ma'ani al-Akhbar, p. 249
Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his ancestors that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) cursed the plucker of hair and the one who has her hair plucked, the tooth filer and the one who has her teeth filed, the hair extender and the one who has her hair extended, and the tattooer and the one who has a tattoo.
✅ Due to the need for necessary explanations, the other cursed individuals in this narration and the next one were not translated and the translation was limited to the part in question, and the other cases will be examined and explained in their own place. If Allah wills.
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 5, p. 559
Translation: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The tattooer and the one who has a tattoo, and the 'najish' and the 'manjush' are cursed on the tongue of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family).
✅ Note 1: Tattooing has also been severely condemned in public narrations, but since only Shia narrations are a proof for us, we will suffice with these, and given the authenticity of both narrations and the lack of a conflicting one, we act upon their content and avoid this practice.
✅ Note 2: Neither in Shia narrations nor in public narrations has any permission for this type of tattooing been reported, and its prohibition is uniform and without a conflicting narration.
Meaning: There is no problem with anything a woman uses to adorn herself for her husband.
But it should be noted that any adornment and act that has been prohibited by the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) is not included in these generalities and should be avoided, and one of these is the various types of tattooing.
✅ Note 4: In spreading this text among those who intend to be religious and obey the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), strive so that in addition to enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, those who have unknowingly committed this prohibited act become aware.
✅ Note 5: Having an unattractive appearance or sparse eyebrows does not justify a person using prohibited methods such as tattooing to gain her husband's satisfaction and to adorn herself for him.
✅ Note 6: If there is a type of adornment that is referred to by the same names mentioned in the text above and does not involve injecting materials under the skin and tattooing, and is only applied to the skin like a cream or kohl, it naturally has a separate ruling.
