Question 1949: Should the Adhan (call to prayer) and Iqama be recited loudly (*jahr*) or quietly (*ikhfat*)?
✅ Answer: Refer to the following narrations:
📚 *Al-Faqih*, Vol. 1, p. 284
Muawiyah ibn Wahab asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about Adhan. The Imam replied: Recite it loudly (*jahr*) and raise your voice, but for Iqama, recite it with a lower voice.
📚 *Al-Faqih*, Vol. 1, p. 284
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said in a narration: It suffices for Adhan to be audible to your own ears and understandable to you. The louder you raise your voice, without causing yourself hardship, the more people will hear it, and your reward will be greater.
📚 *Al-Tahdhib*, Vol. 2, p. 58
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: When you recite Adhan, do not hide your voice, for Allah, the Exalted, grants you reward in proportion to the reach of your voice.
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, it is recommended that Adhan be recited loudly (*jahr*), while Iqama should be recited with a lower voice.
If the Adhan and Iqama are recited at a level audible and understandable to the reciter, it suffices. However, it is better to recite Adhan with a loud and clear voice (*jahr*) and Iqama with a relatively quieter voice. Hiding one’s voice during Adhan is discouraged.
