Question 1939: A person has claimed that, according to narrations, placing mud or cement bricks on the lahd (niche) of a grave is inappropriate. Instead, bricks must be made from the soil of the grave, or the soil itself should be directly poured over the deceased's body without using bricks. Is this claim correct?

✅ Answer: Consider the following narrations:

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 1, p. 458

Ishaq ibn Ammar said: I heard Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: When you descend into the grave, say... and then place the bricks and clay (on the lahd's door) while saying...

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 197

Aban narrated: I heard Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: Imam Ali (peace be upon him) placed bricks on the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)! I asked: If someone places baked bricks on the grave, does it harm the deceased? The Imam replied: No!

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 171

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The depth of a grave should be up to the collarbone, or as one of the Imams (peace be upon them) said, up to the chest of a standing person. Another said it should be the height of a man so that if a cloth were stretched over the grave, the head of the standing person in the grave would be under the cloth. The lahd (niche) should be such that sitting in it is possible.

✅ The collarbone is the bone located at the top of the chest between the throat notch and the shoulder.

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 189

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Anything placed on the grave, other than its own soil, burdens and weighs down the deceased!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 202

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prohibited placing soil on a grave that is not from it.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 201

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Do not plaster the grave with anything other than its own soil!

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 166

Imam Reza (peace be upon him) said: When Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) was in his final moments, he instructed: When I die, dig a grave for me and make a *shaq* in the grave. And if you are told that a lahd was prepared for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), they have spoken the truth.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 140

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: My father wrote in his will... and because he was overweight, we made a *shaq* in the ground for him!

📚 'Ilal al-Shara'i', p. 309

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) descended into the grave and placed Sa’d ibn Mu’adh in the lahd. He arranged bricks around him and said: Give me a stone; give me clay, sealing the gaps between the bricks with it...

📚 Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 77, p. 341

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said in a sermon about death: The deceased is placed in a grave containing a narrow lahd lined with bricks to form a barrier and covered with a large stone. The soil from the grave is then poured over them, and clods of earth are mixed in with the soil.

✅ Based on the above narrations, the grave should be dug to the depth of the collarbone (approximately 1.5 meters), the chest of a man, or the height of a person. A niche called the lahd is then dug on the side facing the qibla, with enough height for a person to sit in. The deceased is placed on their right side facing the qibla, and the lahd's opening is sealed with raw bricks or similar materials, filling the gaps with clay made from the grave’s soil. The grave is then filled with the soil excavated from it.

✅ Another method, especially for overweight individuals, is also mentioned in the narrations. In this method, after digging the grave to the mentioned depth, a narrower trench is made at the bottom, the deceased is placed in it, and it is sealed with raw bricks or similar materials. The gaps are filled with clay, and the soil excavated from the grave is poured back.

Today, in cemeteries in Iran, only the shaq method is commonly used, and the lahd has been almost completely abandoned!

✅ It is noteworthy that the narrations clearly indicate that the lahd's opening is sealed with raw bricks or similar materials, and even the gaps are filled with clay from the grave’s soil before the grave is filled with its excavated soil.

✅ A person without sufficient expertise in the jurisprudence of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) has claimed that using cement blocks or similar materials on the lahd or shaq door violates the narration that states, 'Anything placed on the grave, other than its own soil, burdens and weighs down the deceased.' They also claim that bricks for the lahd must be made from the grave’s soil before the person’s death, or the soil should be directly poured over the body without using bricks. However, as shown in the above narrations, raw bricks or similar materials to seal the lahd's door are not prohibited but are a recommended tradition of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). There is no justification, narratively or logically, for requiring the lahd’s bricks to be made from the grave’s soil.

✅ This person, who made this error and spread it on social media, is urged to promptly correct their mistake and refrain from making claims in areas they are not proficient in.

✅ Furthermore, this person has recently been involved in narrating about Mahdism and unfortunately has no hesitation in spreading some unreliable narrations and those from extremist sources. Despite claiming to rely entirely on narrations, they sometimes include personal opinions alongside the narrations.

✅ Unfortunately, they also consider at least some forms of music permissible and shamelessly mix their videos, which mention Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him) and narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), with various types of music. Under the pretext of Mahdist topics, they introduce the corrupt sound of music into the ears and hearts of the followers of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) and continuously request financial assistance while promoting and normalizing vices such as music among Shia Muslims.

✅ Since many people may share this text with them to highlight their mistake regarding the lahd’s bricks and stones, I have also included these additional points to bring to their attention. Perhaps they may reflect and refrain from spreading music and inaccurate information about Mahdism.
