Question 1931: Which is the most hopeful verse in the Quran according to narrations?

✅ Answer: Please consider the following narrations:

1⃣ Abu Hamzah Thumali said: I heard Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq (peace be upon them) say: Indeed, Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) addressed the people and said: Which verse in the Quran is the most hopeful in your opinion? One of them replied:

‘Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.’

The Imam said: This is good, but it is not the intended verse.

‘Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah.’

The Imam said: This is excellent, but it is not the intended verse.

‘And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by sin], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins.’

The Imam said: This is excellent, but it is not the intended verse.

After this, the people refrained from giving further opinions. Then Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said: O Muslims! What is wrong with you (that you do not answer)? They said: We have nothing else in our knowledge.

Then Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: The most hopeful verse in the Quran is:

‘And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.’

He said: O Ali! By the One who sent me as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, indeed, when one of you goes to perform ablution, sins fall from his limbs, and when he faces Allah with his heart and face during prayer, he finishes while no sins remain on him, as if it were the day his mother gave birth to him. And if he commits something [of sin] between two prayers, it will be like that, as the Prophet counted the five daily prayers!

He then said: O Ali! The position of the five daily prayers for my nation is like a flowing river at the door of one of you. What do you think if he has dirt on his body and washes in that river five times a day? Will any dirt remain on him? Thus are the five daily prayers for my nation!

Harb ibn Shurayh said: I asked Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (peace be upon them): Which verse in the Quran is the most hopeful? The Imam replied: What does your community say about this? I said: They say it is verse 53 of Surah Az-Zumar which states: ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah.’

The Imam replied: But we, the Ahlul Bayt, do not say this. I asked: What do you say in this regard? The Imam replied: We consider it to be verse 5 of Surah Ad-Duha, which states: ‘And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied.’

‘This granting is intercession, by Allah! Intercession, by Allah! Intercession, by Allah!’

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, there are many hopeful verses in the Quran. However, the most hopeful ones are verse 114 of Surah Hud regarding establishing obligatory prayers, which lead to the forgiveness of sins, and verse 5 of Surah Ad-Duha, which is about intercession.

✅ Interestingly, the connection between these two verses is that reaching intercession depends on not belittling prayers:

3⃣ Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) said: When my father's death approached, he said to me: O my son! Certainly, whoever belittles prayer will not reach our intercession!
