Question 1927: Is the knowledge of the Imams (peace be upon them) unlimited?

1⃣عن محمد بن عبدالله الخراسانی خادم الرضا علیه السلام قال: قَالَ بَعْضُ الزَّنَادِقَةِ لِأَبِی الْحَسَنِ علیه السلام لِمَ احْتَجَبَ اللَّهُ فَقَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ علیه السلام إِنَّ الْحِجَابَ عَنِ الْخَلْقِ لِکَثْرَةِ ذُنُوبِهِمْ فَأَمَّا هُوَ فَلَا یَخْفَی عَلَیْهِ خَافِیَةٌ فِی آنَاءِ اللَّیْلِ وَ النَّهَارِ قَالَ فَلِمَ لَا تُدْرِکُهُ حَاسَّةُ الْبَصَرِ قَالَ لِلْفَرْقِ بَیْنَهُ وَ بَیْنَ خَلْقِهِ الَّذِینَ تُدْرِکُهُمْ حَاسَّةُ الْأَبْصَارِ ثُمَّ هُوَ أَجَلُّ مِنْ أَنْ تُدْرِکَهُ الْأَبْصَارُ أَوْ یُحِیطَ بِهِ وَهْمٌ أَوْ یَضْبِطَهُ عَقْلٌ قَالَ فَحُدَّهُ لِی قال إِنَّهُ لَا یُحَدُّ قال لِمَ قَالَ لِأَنَّ کُلَّ مَحْدُودٍ مُتَنَاهٍ إِلَی حَدٍّ فَإِذَا احْتَمَلَ التَّحْدِیدُ احْتَمَلَ الزِّیَادَةُ و إِذَا احْتَمَلَ الزِّیَادَةُ احْتَمَلَ النُّقْصَانُ فَهُوَ غَیْرُ مَحْدُودٍ و لَا مُتَزَایِدٍ وَ لَا مُتَجَزئ و لَا مُتَوَهَّمٍ.
📚 *'Ilal al-Shara'i*, p. 129
Muhammad ibn Abdullah said: A disbeliever asked Imam Kazim (peace be upon him), 'Why is Allah veiled?' The Imam replied, 'The veil is due to the abundance of people's sins, yet nothing in the moments of night or day is hidden from Him.'
The man asked, 'Why can vision not perceive Him?' The Imam replied, 'Because of the difference between Him and His creation. He is greater than what eyes can perceive or minds can encompass.'
The man asked, 'Define His limits for me.' The Imam replied, 'He has no limits.' The man asked, 'Why?' The Imam explained, 'Because anything limited can be exceeded. If something can increase, it can also decrease. Thus, He is infinite, indivisible, and beyond comprehension.'
2⃣عن أَبِی عَلِیٍّ الْقَصَّابِ قال: کُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِی عَبْداللَّهِ علیه السلام فَقُلْتُ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ مُنْتَهَی عِلْمِهِ فَقَالَ لَا تَقُلْ ذَلِکَ فَإِنَّهُ لَیْسَ لِعِلْمِهِ مُنْتَهًی
📚 *Tawhid al-Saduq*, p. 134
Abu Ali Qassab said: I was with Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), and I said, 'Praise be to Allah to the extent of the end of His knowledge.'
The Imam responded, 'Do not say that! Allah’s knowledge has no end.'

3⃣عن ضُرَیْسٍ عن أَبِی جَعْفَرٍ علیه السلام قَالَ: إِنَّ لِلَّهِ عِلْمَیْنِ عِلْماً مَبْذُولًا وَ عِلْماً مَکْفُوفاً فَأَمَّا الْمَبْذُولُ فَإِنَّهُ لَیْسَ مِنْ شَیْءٍ یَعْلَمُهُ الْمَلَائِکَةُ وَ الرُّسُلُ إِلَّا نَحْنُ نَعْلَمُهُ وَ أَمَّا الْمَکْفُوفُ فَهُوَ الَّذِی عِنْدَ اللَّهِ فِی أُمِّ الْکِتَابِ.
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'Indeed, Allah has two types of knowledge: bestowed knowledge and preserved knowledge.'
'The bestowed knowledge is what the angels and messengers know, and we also know it. The preserved knowledge is in the Umm al-Kitab (Mother of the Book) with Allah.'

4⃣عن زرارة قال سَمِعْتُ أَبَاجَعْفَرٍ یَقُولُ لَوْ لَا أَنَّا نَزْدَادُ لَأَنْفَدْنَا قَالَ قُلْتُ تَزْدَادُونَ شَیْئاً لَا یَعْلَمُهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَمَا إِنَّهُ إِذَا کَانَ ذَلِکَ عُرِضَ عَلَی رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ عَلَی الْأَئِمَّةِ ثُمَّ انْتَهَی الْأَمْرُ إِلَیْنَا.
Zurarah reported: I heard Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) say, 'If we did not increase in knowledge, we would run out.'
I asked, 'Do you gain knowledge that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) did not know?' The Imam replied, 'When something occurs, it is first presented to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), then to the Imams (peace be upon them), and then to us.'
📚 *Tawhid al-Saduq*, p. 134
Kahili said: In a prayer, I wrote to Imam Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him), saying, 'Praise be to Allah to the extent of the end of His knowledge.' The Imam replied, 'Do not say “the end of His knowledge.” Instead, say “to the extent of His satisfaction.”'
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, divine knowledge is unlimited and has no end. However, the knowledge of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) is a portion of the knowledge granted by Allah. It is continuously increasing, which is characteristic of finite beings. Thus, the knowledge of the Imams is finite and not unlimited.
