Question 1924: Is it problematic to approximately predict the time of the reappearance (Zuhur) before clear and definitive signs, such as the heavenly cry (Sayhah) and the emergence of Sufyani, for example, within five years or similar estimations?
✅ Answer: Consider the following narrations:
📚 *Al-Kafi*, Vol. 1, p. 369
Muhezam said: We mentioned the rulers of the Banu Abbas before Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him). The Imam said: 'Indeed, people perish because of their haste in this matter. Allah, the Exalted, does not hasten for the haste of His servants. This matter has an appointed end, and when it reaches its final point, it will neither be hastened nor delayed by even an hour.'
📚 *Al-Kafi*, Vol. 1, p. 368
Abdulrahman said: I was with Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) when Muhezam came in and said: 'May I be sacrificed for you! Inform me about this matter we are awaiting; when will it occur?' The Imam replied: 'O Muhezam! Those who set a time have lied, those who hasten perish, and those who submit will be saved.'
📚 *Al-Ghaybah* by Al-Tusi
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'Those who set a time (for the reappearance) lie. We have not set a time in the past, and we will not set one in the future.'
📚 *Al-Ghaybah* by Al-Tusi
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'If anyone sets a time for you, do not hesitate to call him a liar. We do not set a time for anyone.'
📚 *Al-Ghaybah* by Al-Nu'mani
Abu Basir said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the Qa'im (peace be upon him). The Imam replied: 'Those who set a time (for his reappearance) lie. We, the Ahl al-Bayt, do not set a time. Then he added: Allah, the Exalted, refuses except to contradict the time set by those who appoint one.'
📚 *Al-Ghaybah* by Al-Tusi, p. 142
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: 'The Sufyani (may Allah curse him) and the Qa'im (peace be upon him) will emerge in the same year.'
📚 *Kamal al-Din*, p. 380
Ali ibn Mahziar said: I wrote to Imam Hadi (peace be upon him) asking about relief (Faraj). The Imam replied: 'When your leader is absent from the abode of the oppressors, expect relief.'
📚 *Kamal al-Din*, p. 651
Abdullah ibn Abi Mansur al-Bajali said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the name of the Sufyani. The Imam replied: 'What do you need with his name? When he takes control of the five regions of Syria—Damascus, Homs, Palestine, Jordan, and Qinnasrin—then expect relief at that time.'
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, the timing of the reappearance of our master, Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him), is known only to Allah, the Exalted. Anyone who sets a time, even implicitly, is a liar and should be refuted without hesitation. What we are required to do is to generally await relief from the beginning of the Imam’s occultation and more specifically from the time the Sufyani gains control over the five regions of Syria, as the year of the Sufyani's emergence and the Imam’s reappearance will be the same year.
