1⃣عن مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْداللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْحِمْیَرِیِّ عَنْ صَاحِبِ الزَّمَانِ أَنَّهُ کَتَبَ إِلَیْهِ وَ سَأَلَهُ هَلْ یَجُوزُ لِلرَّجُلِ إِذَا صَلَّی الْفَرِیضَةَ أَوِ النَّافِلَةَ وَ بِیَدِهِ السُّبْحَةُ أَنْ یُدِیرَهَا وَ هُوَ فِی الصَّلَاةِ فَأَجَابَ یَجُوزُ ذَلِکَ إِذَا خَافَ السَّهْوَ وَ الْغَلَطَ وَ سَأَلَهُ هَلْ یَجُوزُ أَنْ یُدِیرَ السُّبْحَةَ بِالْیَدِ الْیَسَارِ إِذَا سَبَّحَ أَوْ لَا یَجُوزُ فَأَجَابَ یَجُوزُ ذَلِکَ و الْحَمْدُلِلَّهِ.

Humayri wrote to Imam al-Mahdi (peace be upon him) and asked whether it is permissible for someone to spin a rosary during obligatory or recommended prayers. The Imam replied: 'If one fears distraction or mistake, it is permissible!'

He also asked whether it is permissible to spin the rosary with the left hand while reciting praises or if it is not allowed. The Imam replied: 'It is permissible, all praise belongs to Allah!'

Humayri wrote to Imam al-Mahdi (peace be upon him) and asked whether it is permissible to recite praises using a rosary made of the soil from the grave of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) and whether it has any merit. The Imam replied: 'It is permissible to use it for praises, and no rosary has greater merit than it. Among its merits is that even if the person forgets to recite praises and merely spins the rosary, the praises will still be recorded for them.'

3⃣عن مُحَمَّدِ بن جَعْفَرٍ اَلْمُؤَدِّبِ قال حَدَّثَنَا اَلْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ اَلصَّائِغُ اَلْمَعْرُوفُ بِأَبِي صَالِحٍ يَرْفَعُهُ إِلَى بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِ أَبِي اَلْحَسَنِ مُوسَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَلَيْهِمَا اَلسَّلاَمُ قال: دَخَلْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لاَ تَسْتَغْنِي شِيعَتُنَا عَنْ أَرْبَعٍ خُمْرَةٍ يُصَلِّي عَلَيْهَا و خَاتَمٍ يَتَخَتَّمُ بِهِ وَ سِوَاكٍ يَسْتَاكُ بِهِ و سُبْحَةٍ مِنْ طِينِ قَبْرِ أَبِي عَبْداَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ فِيهَا ثَلاَثٌ وَ ثَلاَثُونَ حَبَّةً مَتَى قَلَبَهَا ذَاكِراً لِلَّهِ كُتِبَ لَهُ بِكُلِّ حَبَّةٍ أَرْبَعُونَ حَسَنَةً وَ إِذَا قَلَبَهَا سَاهِياً يَعْبَثُ بِهَا كُتِبَ لَهُ عِشْرُونَ حَسَنَةً

Someone narrated: I visited Imam al-Kazim (peace be upon him), and the Imam said: 'Our followers cannot do without a few things: a prayer mat (made of straw) to pray on, a ring to wear, a miswak (tooth-stick) for cleaning teeth, and a rosary made of the soil from Imam Husayn’s grave (peace be upon him) with 33 beads. When one spins it while remembering Allah, 40 good deeds are recorded for each bead. If one spins it absentmindedly or as a form of play, 20 good deeds are still recorded.'

4⃣عن محمد بن عبداللَّه بن جَعْفَرٍ اَلْحِمْيَرِيِّ قال: كَتَبْتُ إِلَى اَلْفَقِيهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ أَسْأَلُهُ هَلْ يَجُوزُ أَنْ يُسَبِّحَ اَلرَّجُلُ بِطِينِ قَبْرِ اَلْحُسَيْنِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ و هَلْ فِيهِ فَضْلٌ فَأَجَابَ و قَرَأْتُ اَلتَّوْقِيعَ وَ مِنْهُ نَسَخْتُ يُسَبِّحُ بِهِ فَمَا فِي شَيْءٍ مِنَ اَلتَّسْبِيحِ أَفْضَلُ مِنْهُ و مِنْ فَضْلِهِ إِنَّ اَلْمُسَبِّحَ يَنْسَى اَلتَّسْبِيحَ و يُدِيرُ اَلسُّبْحَةَ فَيُكْتَبُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ اَلتَّسْبِيحُ.

Humayri wrote to the Imam (either Imam al-Mahdi or Imam al-Askari, peace be upon them) asking if it is permissible to recite praises using a rosary made of the soil from Imam Husayn’s grave and if it has any merit. The Imam replied, and Humayri copied the written response: 'Reciting praises with it is permissible, and no rosary has greater merit than it. Among its merits is that if the person forgets to recite praises and merely spins it, the praises will still be recorded.'

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, spinning a rosary for counting and reciting various invocations during or outside of prayer is not prohibited and is permissible. However, it is particularly recommended to use a rosary made of the soil from Imam Husayn's grave (peace be upon him), as spinning it, even without reciting praises, holds virtue.
