Question 1905: Is there any recommendation in narrations for the mixture of salt and thyme?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
📚 Mustadrak al-Wasail, Vol. 16, p. 342
📚 Makarem al-Akhlaq, p. 218
It is narrated from Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) who said: There are four things that brighten the eyes and only bring benefits without harm!
He was asked about these things, and the Imam replied: Thyme and salt together, and ajwain and walnut together!
It was asked, what benefits do these four things provide when combined? He replied: Ajwain and walnut burn hemorrhoids, expel gases, improve complexion, strengthen the stomach, and warm the kidneys!
But the mixture of salt and thyme expels gases from the heart, clears blockages (in arteries, etc.), burns phlegm, promotes urination, enhances aroma, softens the stomach, removes bad breath, and strengthens the genitals!
📚 Makarem al-Akhlaq, p. 214.
It is narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that when he ate white food or food prone to corruption and evil, he requested ajwain, thyme, and black seeds, consumed them dry, and began his meal with them along with coarse salt. He would say: If I eat it in the morning, I do not worry about what I consume! And he would say: It strengthens the stomach, eliminates phlegm, and protects from paralysis!
✅ 'Sa'tar' or 'Sa'tar' is thyme, which has different types and is considered a warm and dry herb. Its mixture with salt has properties as mentioned in narration 1⃣ and others.
✅ Some other properties of the thyme plant are mentioned in the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 375
Imam Kazim (peace be upon him) said: The remedy of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) was thyme, and he would say: It creates fibers in the stomach like those on a towel!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 6, p. 375
A person complained of bodily dampness to Imam Kazim (peace be upon him). The Imam instructed him to consume dry thyme on an empty stomach!
✅ Some evidence shows that the mixture of thyme and salt was even common as a stew:
5⃣ Abu Wa'il said: My friend and I went to Salman, sat with him, and he said: If the Prophet (peace be upon him) had not forbidden pretense, I would have gone to great lengths for you. Then he brought plain bread and salt without seasoning. My friend said: I wish this salt had thyme mixed in! Salman sent his pitcher and placed it as collateral to get thyme. When we ate, my friend said: Praise be to God, who made us content with what He provided us! Salman replied: If you were truly content with what He provided, my pitcher would not be in collateral!
