Question 1898: Why did the Imams (peace be upon them) sometimes cite the poetry of pre-Islamic poets?
✅ Answer: Refer to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 21
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: May Allah have mercy on a servant who maintains chastity, avoids the forbidden, and refrains from begging, for otherwise he rushes towards disgrace in this world, and people do not benefit him!
Then, Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) recited a verse from the poetry of Hatim, which says:
'When I embraced despair of what is in people’s hands, I found it to be self-sufficiency if the self knows it. Greed for what others possess is poverty!'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 2, p. 149
📚 Kamal al-Din wa Tamam al-Ni'mah, Vol. 1, p. 163.
Anbasa said: When Ismail, the son of Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), passed away and we completed the funeral rites, Imam Sadiq sat quietly with his head down, while we sat around him. Then he raised his head and said: 'O people! Indeed, this world is a house of separation and estrangement, a place of twists and turns, not a house of stability. Thus, in separation from one who was dear, there is a pain that cannot be removed and a sorrow that cannot be lifted. People excel over one another through kind consolation and sound reflection! So, if one has not lost a brother and mourned for him, his brother will mourn for him, and if he has not lost a child, he will precede his child!'
Then, the Imam recited the words of Abi Khirash al-Hudhali (a poet from the pre-Islamic period) in lamenting his brother:
'Do not think I have forgotten his promise * But, O Umaym, my patience over him is beautiful!'
📚 Jafariyat, p. 230
Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'Indeed, some speech is like magic, some knowledge is ignorance, some poetry is wisdom, and some sayings are bewildering.'
📚 Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 1, p. 218
Imam Musa al-Kadhim (peace be upon him) narrated from his ancestors that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'Indeed, some speech is like magic, some knowledge is ignorance, some poetry is wisdom, and some sayings are just.'
✅ On rare occasions, the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) would cite the poetry of pre-Islamic and other poets, as the Ahl al-Bayt themselves explained that some poetry contains wisdom, making it permissible to quote.
