Question 1877: Does the fast become invalid if someone's stomach becomes acidic and something from the stomach comes up to their mouth along with a burp?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 108
Muhammad ibn Muslim said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about Qals (which means a little food or drink coming up along with a burp) and whether it invalidates the fast. The Imam said: No!'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 108
Ammar said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a fasting person who has food or drink come out from their stomach until it reaches their throat, and then it returns back to the stomach. The Imam said: It does not invalidate the fast!'
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 108
Sama'ah said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about Qals, which is the burping that brings up food without vomiting, while the person is standing in prayer. The Imam said: It does not break their wudu, nor does it invalidate their prayer, nor does it invalidate their fast!'
📚 Al-Tahdheeb, Vol. 4, p. 265
Abdullah ibn Sinan said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a fasting person who experiences Qals and food comes up. The Imam said: It does not invalidate the fast!'
I asked: 'What if, after it reaches the tongue, they swallow it again?' The Imam replied: 'It does not invalidate the fast!'
✅ Sometimes, due to stomach acid or fullness, along with burping, a small amount of food or drink rises from within a person to the throat or even into their mouth. This is called Qals, and it is stated in the linguistic definition that if the amount is no more than the size of the mouth, it is called Qals. If it is more than that, it is called vomiting or emesis.
The above narrations show that Qals and the rising of a small amount of food or drink to the throat or mouth does not invalidate the fast, does not break the wudu, and does not invalidate the prayer, even if it happens while in prayer.
✅ In narrations 2⃣ and 4⃣, it is clear that even if the food or drink returns from the throat and tongue back to the stomach, it does not invalidate the fast.
