Question 1872: Is it obligatory to fully cover the length and width of the feet during wiping (in ablution)?

✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:

Ahmad said: I asked Imam Reza, peace be upon him, about how to wipe over the two feet. He placed his palm on his toes and wiped towards the ankles, over the top of the feet!

So I asked: May I be sacrificed for you, what if someone wipes with two fingers like this? He replied: No, only with the entire palm of the hand!

📚 Al-Kafi, Volume 3, Page 29

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said: For wiping the head, the area of three fingers is sufficient, and the same applies to the feet!

📚 Al-Kafi, Volume 3, Page 25

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, described the ablution of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: ... Then he wiped his head and feet with the remaining moisture from his hand without taking new water for them!

Then he said: He did not insert his fingers under the straps of the sandals (Arabic-style shoes)!

Then he said: Allah (in verse 6 of Surah Al-Ma'idah) says: 'Wipe your heads and feet up to the ankles'.

Therefore, if part of his head or part of his feet, from the toes to the ankles, is wiped, it is sufficient!

📚 Al-Kafi, Volume 3, Page 31

Ja'far bin Suleiman said: I asked Imam Kadhim, peace be upon him, and said: May I be sacrificed for you! The closed shoe of a person has a tear and gap, so he inserts his hand inside and wipes over the top of his foot. Is that sufficient for him? He replied: Yes!

📚 Tahdhib, Volume 1, Page 90

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said regarding wiping: You wipe over the sandals and do not insert your hand under the strap, and if you wipe part of your head or part of your feet, between the ankles and the toes, it is sufficient!

✅ From the above narrations, it is clear that while wiping over the entire foot with the palm of the hand is preferred, covering the width of three fingers is also sufficient, so it is not obligatory to wipe the entire width of the foot. However, wiping with just two fingers is prohibited, and the width of three fingers is sufficient.

✅ Regarding covering the length, the above narrations clarify that wiping a part of the area between the toes and the ankles is sufficient. Also, indicators such as not needing to insert the hand under the straps of the sandals or remove a shoe with a gap show that full length coverage, from the toes to the ankles, is not required.

✅ Interestingly, those who engage in independent reasoning argue that even though wiping with two fingers is explicitly prohibited and wiping with three fingers is sufficient, they claim that wiping with one finger is sufficient by consensus! However, regarding the length, where the narrations clearly state that wiping part of the area between the toes and the ankles is sufficient, they argue by consensus that full length coverage is obligatory, requiring wiping the entire area from the toes to the ankles!

✅ Based on the above narrations, ornamental or other barriers on the toenails of men or women do not pose a problem for wiping, as when one fulfills the obligation by wiping over the foot, part of the wiping area is covered.
