Question 1867: If someone performs an act of innovation or wrong on behalf of a deceased person, does it reach the deceased and cause punishment or harm?
✅ Answer: Refer to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 7, p. 57
Muawiyah ibn Ammar said: I asked Imam Sadiq (PBUH): What reaches a person after death? The Imam replied: A tradition (sunnah) that he established, which continues to be practiced after his death, for which he will receive the same reward as those who follow it, without diminishing their reward. Also, continuous charity (sadaqah jariyah) that continues after him, and a righteous child who prays for his parents after their death, performs Hajj on their behalf, gives charity, frees slaves, fasts, and prays on their behalf. I asked: Should I include them in my Hajj? He replied: Yes!
📚 Al-Mahasin, p. 72
Muawiyah ibn Ammar said: I asked Imam Sadiq (PBUH): What reaches a person after their death? He replied: Hajj, charity, and fasting on their behalf reach them!
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 185
Imam Sadiq (PBUH) said: Whoever performs a good deed on behalf of a Muslim will have their reward doubled, and Allah will benefit the deceased because of it!
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 1, p. 185
Imam Sadiq (PBUH) said: Prayer, fasting, charity, kindness, and supplication for the deceased enter their grave, and the reward is written for both the performer and the deceased.
📚 Al-Mahasin, p. 27, Hadith 8
Ismail Jafari said: I heard Imam Baqir (PBUH) say: Whoever establishes a just tradition (sunnah) that is followed, will receive the reward of those who act upon it without diminishing their rewards. However, whoever establishes an unjust tradition that is followed, will bear the sin of those who act upon it, without diminishing their sins.
✅ Based on the above narrations, acts such as prayer, fasting, Hajj, charity, or any other good deeds performed on behalf of the deceased reach them and benefit them. However, this does not apply to wrongful or sinful acts. If someone performs an incorrect or sinful deed on behalf of the deceased, it does not reach the deceased or cause them harm.
✅ According to Hadith 5 and similar narrations, if someone establishes an unjust or incorrect tradition, the sins of those who follow it will always be written for them, without diminishing the sins of those who follow it. However, wrongful acts performed on behalf of the deceased do not reach them and do not cause any harm.
