Question 1856: Due to our job, we visit the homes of the needy to check on their condition and attend to their needs. Sometimes, they offer us something to eat. Considering that some of them are orphans, can we partake in the food offered by orphans?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:

Abdullah bin Yahya says: It was said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): We visit a brother who lives in the house of orphans, and they have a servant who is with them. We sit on their carpets, drink their water, and their servant serves us. Sometimes, we eat food in that house with our friend, while the food of the orphans is also there! What is your opinion on this matter? The Imam replied: If your visit to them brings benefit and profit to them, there is no harm; but if it causes them harm, then no! And he said: 'Rather, man is well aware of himself' (Surah Al-Qiyamah, Verse 14), so it is not hidden from you (and you will understand the situation), while Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, says (in Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 220): 'And if you associate with them, they are your brothers (in faith), and Allah knows the corrupter from the reformer!'
✅ Based on the above narration and the Quranic principles mentioned, partaking in the food offered by orphans when visiting them is permissible if your visit brings benefit to them, and if it causes them harm, then it is prohibited to partake in their food.
✅ If the visit does not benefit the orphans, one can compensate for the food by doing the following:

Ali bin Mughira says: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): I have a niece who is an orphan, and sometimes something is gifted to her, and I eat from it. Then, afterward, I feed her something from my own wealth and say: 'O Lord! This is in exchange for that!' The Imam replied: There is no harm in that!
