Question 1851: What happens to the righteous deeds performed by infidels, polytheists, and Nasibis in this world?

✅ Pay attention to the following verses and narrations:

Translation: If it were not that people would become one community (of disbelievers), We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful, for their houses, ceilings of silver and stairs to ascend.

And for their houses, doors and couches on which to recline.

And gold adornments. But all that is nothing but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.

📖Surah Az-Zukhruf

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 463

Ya'qub ibn Shu'ayb said: I asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him: Is there any obligatory or necessary reward from Allah for someone other than the believers for the deed he does? He replied: No!

📚 Tafsir al-Qummi, vol. 2, p. 131

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, regarding Allah's statement in Surah Al-An'am, verse 160: 'Whoever brings a good deed will receive ten times as much,' said: This is for the general Muslims, and the 'good deed' refers to the guardianship (wilayah). Thus, whoever performs a good deed will have ten (rewards) written for him, and if he lacks the guardianship, that good deed and act of kindness he did will be removed from him in this world (and its reward will be given to him here), and he will have no share on the Day of Resurrection!

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 446

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah, the Glorious and Majestic, says: No servant whom I intend to enter Paradise, except that I afflict him in his body! So if this was expiation for his sin (so be it), and if not, I make death difficult for him so that he meets Me without any sin, and then I admit him to Paradise! And no servant whom I intend to enter the Fire, except that I keep his body healthy! So if this fulfilled his claim from Me (so be it), and if not, I make his provision ample! So if this fulfilled his claim from Me (so be it), and if not, I make death easy for him so that he comes to Me without any good deed, and then I admit him to the Fire!

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 446

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said: A prophet from the prophets of the Children of Israel passed by a man whose body was partly under a wall and partly outside of it, and birds had scattered and disheveled his body, and dogs had torn him apart! Then he went until he saw a city appear before him and entered it, and observed that a great man of that city had died and was placed on a throne with a silk cloth over him and many people around him!

So he said: O Lord! I bear witness that You are a just ruler who does not oppress! You caused that servant of Yours, who had not associated anything with You for even a blink of an eye, to die that death, and this servant of Yours, who had not believed in You for even a blink of an eye, to die this death?!

So the Lord said: O My servant! As you said, I am a just ruler who does not oppress! That servant of Mine had some evil or sin with Me, so I caused him to die that death so that he meets Me without any of his sins remaining, and this servant had a good deed with Me, so I caused him to die that death so that he meets Me without any good deed!

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 444

Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah, the Glorious and Majestic, says: By My might and majesty! I do not take out of this world any servant whom I intend to have mercy on until I take from him every sin he has committed, either through illness in his body, or narrowness in his provision, or fear in his worldly life! So if anything remains on him, I make death difficult for him!

And by My might and majesty! I do not take out of this world any servant whom I intend to punish until I give him every good deed he has done, either through ample provision, or health in his body, or security in his worldly life! So if anything remains on him, I make death easy for him!

📚 Tafsir al-Qummi, vol. 1, p. 70

Sufyan said: After returning from the station (of Arafat), a man asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him: Do you think Allah answers all these people? The Imam replied: No one, whether believer or disbeliever, stands at this station (of Arafat) except that Allah forgives him! Except that they have three positions in their forgiveness: A believer whose past and future sins Allah forgives and frees him from the fire of Hell... until he said: And a disbeliever who stands at this station for the adornment of worldly life, if he repents from polytheism, Allah forgives his past sins, and if he does not repent, Allah gives him his full reward in this world and does not deprive him of the reward of this station (of Arafat), and this is the divine statement (in Surah Hud, verses 15 and 16): 'Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments - We fully repay them for their deeds therein, and they therein will not be deprived. Those are the ones for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire, and lost is what they did therein, and worthless is what they used to do.'

📚 Sharh Nahj al-Balagha, Ibn Abi al-Hadid, vol. 14, p. 233

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said in a narration: Any Muslim or infidel who performs a good deed, his reward is certainly on Allah either in the short term of his worldly life or the long term of his Hereafter!

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 189

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said in a narration: There was a believer in the kingdom of a tyrant. So he was disrespected and desired (harmed) by him, and as a result, the believer fled from him and went to the land of polytheism and stayed with a man from the people of polytheism, who also took him under his shade, treated him kindly, and hosted him!

When that polytheist's death approached, Allah, the Glorious and Majestic, revealed to him: By My might and majesty, if there were a dwelling for you in Paradise, I would surely let you dwell in it, but Paradise is forbidden to anyone who dies in association with Me. But O Fire! Frighten him but do not harm him, and his provision is brought to him morning and evening. I said: From Paradise?! He replied: From wherever Allah wills!

✅ According to the above narrations and others, if infidels, polytheists, and Nasibis, who are destined for eternal Hellfire, perform good deeds in this world, Allah the Almighty rewards them with things like ample provision, bodily health, ease of death in this world, or sometimes a reduction in the punishment of the Hereafter, but they will have no place in Paradise!
