Question 1848: Is playing drums in the mourning ceremonies for Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) a tradition and part of the rituals?

✅ Answer: Refer to the following narrations:

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 6, p. 432

📚 Tafsir al-Qummi, vol. 2, p. 304

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: Among the signs of the Hour (Day of Judgment or the reappearance) are wasting prayers, following desires, and inclining towards whims. At that time, there will be people who learn the Quran for reasons other than Allah... They will approve of the drum and musical instruments.

📚 Al-Khisal, p. 337

Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said in a narration: O Nuf! Beware of being a tax collector for the sultan, a poet (who composes falsehood), a policeman, a patrol leader, or a person who owns a drum or a tambourine.

📚 Al-Faqih, vol. 4, p. 6

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his ancestors that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) in the Hadith of Manahi, forbade playing with dice, chess, drums, and the lute (a type of musical instrument).

📚 Al-Ja'fariyyat, p. 43

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his father from his grandfather that while the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) was giving a sermon on a Friday, there was a market called Batha. The tribe of Banu Salim used to bring slaves, horses, and sheep to this market. When the Ansar would get married, they played a one-sided drum and flute. When this was heard, people would go to them, leaving the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) during the sermon. Then Allah blamed them for this and revealed the verse: 'When they see some merchandise or diversion, they disperse to it and leave you standing. Say: What is with Allah is better than diversion and merchandise, and Allah is the best of providers.'

✅ In the authentic Shia narrations mentioned, drums are only condemned and prohibited, being categorized among musical instruments which are explicitly forbidden.

✅ Unfortunately, for many years this prohibited instrument has become a tool for mourning in processions. Due to the improper silence of scholars, more and larger drums are played each year in the name of mourning for Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), and no one feels obligated to clarify and forbid this wrong practice.

Some have even gone further to claim that drums, because they have become a custom in mourning for Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), are considered part of the rituals and must be revered!!! However, even if drums were not explicitly condemned, using them in mourning ceremonies would still be considered an innovation since they were not part of the mourning traditions of the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them).

✅ Our scholars, instead of explaining these narrations and forbidding the use of drums, constantly beat the drum of 'not interfering with the affairs of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him)!'
