Question 1820: Did Yahya ibn Abdulrahman ibn Khakan report an inaccurate description of the prostration of gratitude by Imam Hadi (peace be upon him) to mock and discredit him?

✅ Answer: Recently, one of the extremists, aiming to absolve Muhammad ibn Nusayr al-Namiri (may Allah curse him), published an opinion about one of the narrations in the book Al-Kafi. This has caused confusion among some believers. The answer to this will be provided in this brief response.

✅ First, please consider the relevant narration:

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 324

Ali ibn Ibrahim al-Qummi narrated from Yahya ibn Abdullah ibn Khakan, who said: I saw Abu al-Hasan the Third (Imam Hadi, peace be upon him) performing a prostration of gratitude. He spread his two arms on the ground and pressed his chest and stomach against the ground. I asked him about this, and he replied: We like to perform the prostration of gratitude in this manner.

✅ This extremist, because the narrator of the above hadith reported the licentious behavior and sodomy of his beloved Muhammad ibn Nusayr al-Namiri, claimed that Yahya ibn Abdulrahman ibn Khakan, being a relative of the Nasibi minister Mutawakkil and an associate of the Abbasids, had fabricated the manner of Imam Hadi's prostration to mock him.

He claimed:

'Besides the fact that the narrator of this hadith is one of the Nawasib and a staunch enemy of the Ahlul Bayt, imagine the above-mentioned prostration for a moment, and you will realize that the narrator's intention was to discredit and mock Imam Hadi (peace be upon him).'

✅ In response to this extremist's assumption, several points are presented:

1. First of all, performing prostration in this manner is not unique to this narration and this narrator. Similar descriptions are found in other narrations as well:

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 2, p. 555

Hisham ibn Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: When a calamity or hardship befalls someone, or a matter becomes difficult for him, let him uncover his knees and arms and press them against the ground, and let him press his chest against the ground and supplicate for his need while in prostration!

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 324

In an entirely authentic narration, Ja'far ibn Ali said: I saw Imam Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) perform a prostration after prayer. While supplicating, he spread his arms on the ground and pressed his chest against the ground!

📚 Rijal al-Kashshi, p. 192

Musaddaf said: When the group in Kufa (proclaimed divinity for Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him) I informed Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) of this. The Imam fell into prostration, pressed his chest against the ground, and wept, supplicating with his finger (moving it to the right and left) and repeatedly saying: 'Rather, I am a small, humble servant of Allah.'

Then, while his tears were flowing down his beard, he raised his head. I regretted informing him and said: 'May I be your ransom! What harm does their statement bring to you?' The Imam replied: 'O Musaddaf! If Jesus had remained silent about what the Christians said about him, it would have been incumbent upon Allah to deafen his ears and blind his eyes. If I were to remain silent about what Abu al-Khattab (may Allah curse him) says, it would be incumbent upon Allah to deafen my ears and blind my eyes.'

✅ It is evident that in the three above-mentioned narrations with different trustworthy narrators, pressing the chest to the ground during prostration for gratitude and supplication to relieve distress is recommended.

Did the narrators of these hadiths, such as Musaddaf, Hisham ibn Salim, and Ali ibn Ja'far (peace be upon them all), also intend to mock and discredit the Imam?

It is clear that performing prostration in this manner is well-known and recognized in various narrations, and Yahya ibn Abdulrahman ibn Khakan did not intend to mock or discredit Imam Hadi (peace be upon him). The ill intent of this extremist led him to this weak assumption.

2. The second point is that we are not entitled to judge divine decrees with our intellect and consider our rational sense of good and evil as a criterion for evaluating religious rituals. If so, some individuals might consider many religious practices, even the prostration itself, as unbecoming based on their perception, and criticize it. This would result in every religious practice and custom being rejected by some group's perception, leaving nothing intact. Consider the following narrations:

📚 Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 2, p. 303

Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) said: The divine religion is not acquired by incomplete intellects, false opinions, and corrupt analogies, but by submission. Thus, whoever submits to us is safe.

📚 Al-Mahasin, p. 211

The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: There is no room for personal opinion in religion!

✅ Therefore, neither this accursed extremist nor anyone else has the right to judge religious rituals with their intellect and consider some religious practices as mockable or unbecoming. Our duty is to submit to the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them all).

3. The third point is that the narrator before Yahya ibn Abdulrahman ibn Khakan, Ali ibn Ibrahim al-Qummi, is among the great jurists and trustworthy narrators. Considering his contemporaneity with the narrator, he could have far better than this extremist and others determined whether Yahya ibn Abdulrahman ibn Khakan intended to mock or discredit the Imam or whether he was reporting a truthful account.

✅ In conclusion, the falsehood of this extremist's claim is evident, and the narration in Al-Kafi has no textual problem. Even if the narrator was flawed, by comparing the content of this narration with other reliable narrations, it is entirely clear that the content of this hadith is correct and without any issues.

✅ It should be noted that this accursed extremist has been active on social media, posing as a Shia and a supporter of hadith, promoting Ibn Arabi and Shams Tabrizi and others, and propagating their statements, trying to absolve and glorify them.

He is also highly antagonistic towards Shia figures such as Zurarah ibn A'yun, Abu Basir, Muhammad ibn Muslim, Barid, and Sheikh al-Saduq, writing against them while vigorously defending Abu al-Khattab, a notorious extremist during the time of Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him). Thus, he is considered one of the contemporary adherents of the Khatabi sect.

He also defends Muhammad ibn Nusayr al-Namiri (may Allah curse him), to whom the Nusayri sect is attributed.

This accursed individual disseminates a great deal of material from Nusayri books among the Shia and praises figures like Ibn Arabi and Shams Tabrizi, considering Rumi and Ibn Arabi as two great mystics.

✅ This accursed individual is considered an extremist of the Khatabi and Nusayri sects. As he disguises himself as a Shia of the hadith, he has misled some hadith enthusiasts. Therefore, I felt it necessary to declare that this accursed person has no connection with true hadith scholars and is a Khatabi, Nusayri, Sufi deviant. Shia and lovers of the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them all) should be cautious not to be deceived by him and should avoid subscribing to his channel.
