Question 1817: What is the recommended time and number of meals according to narrations?

✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:

1⃣عن محمد بن مسلم عن أبی عبدالله قال قال أمیرالمؤمنین عَشَاءُ الْأَنْبِیَاء بَعْدَ الْعَتَمَة فلا تَدَعُوهُ فَإِنَّ تَرْکَ الْعَشَاء خَرَابُ الْبَدَن

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 6, p. 288

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: The dinner of the prophets is after the Isha prayer (or in the first third of the night, after the red twilight has disappeared)! So do not skip dinner, because skipping dinner ruins and destroys the body!

2⃣ Shihab said: I complained to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the pains and fullness I feel. The Imam said to me: Eat breakfast and dinner, and do not eat anything in between, for eating between breakfast and dinner is harmful and destructive to the body. Have you not heard that Allah, the Blessed and Exalted (in Surah Maryam, verse 11) says: 'Their provision is in the morning and the evening'?

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 6, p. 288

3⃣ Imam Ridha (peace be upon him) said in a narration: When it is midday and people leave their work, and it is the time when people take off their clothes, rest, and eat their meal and take a nap, Allah has commanded them to start with His remembrance and worship. Thus, He made the Dhuhr prayer obligatory at this time so that they can be free for whatever work they like afterward!

📚 Illal al-Shara'i, p. 263

4⃣ The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to Imam Hasan (peace be upon him): Shall I not teach you four things that will make you independent of medicine? Imam Hasan said: Yes! The Commander of the Faithful said: Do not sit at the table unless you are hungry, and do not leave the table unless you still have an appetite, chew your food well, and when you want to sleep, go to the restroom. If you do this, you will not need medicine!

📚 Khisal, p. 228

📚 Mahasin, p. 451

Fadl ibn Yunus said in a narration: Imam Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: Bring the food, for they think we do not eat unplanned meals!

📚 Amali al-Tusi, vol. 2, p. 279

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Whoever wants to prolong his life (though ultimately there is no real prolongation), let him eat breakfast at the beginning of the day, lighten his load (reduce debt), and reduce intimacy with women!

7⃣ In the Risalah Dhahabiyyah attributed to Imam Ridha (peace be upon him), it is mentioned: When it is necessary to eat every day, eat once after eight hours of the day have passed, or eat three times over two days: on the first day, eat breakfast at the beginning of the day, then eat dinner, and on the second day, eat once after eight hours of the day have passed and do not eat dinner. This is what my grandfather Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), to eat once one day and twice the next.

✅ According to the above narrations and others, it is strongly recommended that one should not sit down to eat before becoming hungry and should stop eating before becoming full.

The meal recommendations in narrations 1⃣, 2⃣, and 6⃣ suggest eating breakfast at the beginning of the day, dinner after the Isha prayer, and skipping lunch and any meals between breakfast and dinner!

✅ According to narration 3⃣, eating lunch after the Dhuhr prayer is also permissible, although narration 2⃣ recommends skipping it.

✅ In narration 7⃣ from the Risalah Dhahabiyyah attributed to Imam Ridha (peace be upon him), two types of meal schedules are recommended:

1. Eating once daily after eight hours of the day have passed.

2. Following a two-day schedule where on the first day, breakfast is eaten at the beginning of the day, followed by dinner, and on the second day, eating once after eight hours of the day have passed and skipping dinner. However, given the strong criticism of skipping dinner in reliable narrations, these schedules are considered contradictory and unique.

✅ Despite the recommended meal schedules, according to narration 5⃣, the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) also ate unplanned and untimely meals, indicating its permissibility. Therefore, one of the most important applicable principles from the narrations is that one should not sit down to eat before becoming hungry and should stop eating before becoming full!
