Sa’id narrated: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), "Which is better: Hajj or charity?" The Imam replied three times, "How excellent charity is!" I said, "Yes, but which one is better?" The Imam said, "What prevents you from doing both Hajj and giving charity?" I replied, "His wealth does not suffice for both." The Imam said, "When he intends to spend ten dirhams on something for Hajj, let him spend five dirhams and give the other five as charity, or reduce some expenses for Hajj and give the saved amount as charity, for he will have a reward in that." I said, "If we do this, it will work out." Then the Imam reiterated three times, "Where is there anything like Hajj?"

2⃣عن إبراهیم بن میمون قال: قلت لأبی عبدالله إنی أحج سنة و شریکی سنة قال ما یمنعک من الحج یا إبراهیم قلت لا أتفرغ لذلک جعلت فداک أتصدق بخمسمائة مکان ذلک قال الحج أفضل قلت ألف قال الحج أفضل قلت ألف و خمسمائة قال الحج أفضل قلت ألفین قال فی ألفیک طواف البیت قلت لا قال أ فی ألفیک سعی بین الصفا و المروة قلت لا قال أ فی ألفیک وقوف بعرفة قلت لا قال أ فی ألفیک رمی الجمار قلت لا قال أ فی ألفیک المناسک قلت لا قال الحج أفضل.

Ibrahim narrated: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), "One year I go for Hajj and the next year my partner does. The Imam asked, "O Ibrahim, what prevents you from going for Hajj?" I replied, "May I be your sacrifice! I do not find the time for it. Should I give 500 dirhams in charity instead?" The Imam said, "Hajj is better." I asked, "What about 1,000 dirhams?" The Imam replied, "Hajj is better." I asked, "What about 1,500 dirhams?" The Imam said, "Hajj is better." I asked, "What about 2,000 dirhams?" The Imam responded, "Is there in these 2,000 dirhams of charity the Tawaf around the Kaaba?" I replied, "No." The Imam continued, "Is there in these 2,000 dirhams the Sa'i between Safa and Marwa?" I replied, "No." The Imam asked, "Is there in these 2,000 dirhams the standing in Arafat?" I replied, "No." The Imam asked, "Is there in these 2,000 dirhams the stoning of the Jamarat?" I replied, "No." The Imam asked, "Are there any rituals in these 2,000 dirhams?" I replied, "No." The Imam concluded, "Hajj is better."

3⃣عَنْ أَبِی بَصِیرٍ قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُوعَبْداللَّه حَجَّةٌ خَیْرٌ مِنْ بَیْتٍ مَمْلُوءٍ ذَهَباً یُتَصَدَّقُ بِهِ حَتَّی یَفْنَی.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 260

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: "One Hajj is better than a room full of gold that is given away in charity until it is all gone."

4⃣عن عبدالله بن عبدالرحمن الأصم عن جده قال: قلت لأبی جعفر أیما أفضل الحج أو الصدقة فقال هذه مسألة فیها مسألتان قال کم المال یکون ما یحمل صاحبه إلی الحج قال قلت: لا قال إذا کان مالا یحمل إلی الحج فالصدقة لا تعدل الحج الحج أفضل و إن کانت لا تکون إلا القلیل فالصدقة...

📚 Kamil al-Ziyarat, p. 335

The narrator said: I asked Abu Ja'far (peace be upon him): "Which is better: Hajj or charity?" He replied: "This is a matter that involves two aspects! How much wealth is there? Is it enough to enable its owner to perform Hajj?" I said: "No." He said: "If there is wealth enough to perform Hajj, then charity cannot equal Hajj, and Hajj is better. But if it is only a little, then charity."

5⃣عن عبدالرحمن بن أبی عبدالله قال: قُلْتُ لِأَبِی عَبْداللَّه إِنَّ نَاساً مِنْ هَؤُلَاءِ الْقُصَّاصِ یَقُولُونَ إِذَا حَجَّ الرَّجُلُ حَجَّةً ثُمَّ تَصَدَّقَ وَ وَصَلَ کَانَ خَیْراً لَهُ فَقَالَ کَذَبُوا لَوْ فَعَلَ هَذَا النَّاسُ لَعُطِّلَ هَذَا الْبَیْتُ- إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّوَجَلَّ جَعَلَ هَذَا الْبَیْتَ قِیَاماً لِلنَّاس

📚 'Ilal al-Shara'i', p. 452

Abd al-Rahman said: I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): "Some storytellers claim that it is better for a person to perform Hajj and then give charity and perform acts of kindness." The Imam replied: "They have spoken falsely! If people were to do this, the Kaaba would be deserted. Surely, Allah Almighty has established this house [Kaaba] to be a place of continuity for people!"

✅ According to the above narrations and others, the invalidity of those who discourage optional Hajj is clear.
