Question 1809: Is it permissible to buy and sell women's hair?

✅ One of the matters that, although has a long history, has gained momentum in recent years is connecting natural hair of women to the hair of other women.

First, regarding the ruling on doing this, pay attention to the following narrations:

📚Al-Faqih, Vol. 3, Page 162

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'There is no problem with the business of a stylist as long as he does not make a condition and accepts whatever is given to him, and he does not connect a woman's hair to another woman's hair, but it is not a problem if he connects goat hair to a woman's hair.'

2⃣ Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated in a tradition that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said to a female stylist:

📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 5, Page 119

He said: 'Do not attach (someone's) hair to (another's) hair!'

📚Makarem al-Akhlaq, Page 84

Solomon ibn Khalid said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about putting adornments (hairpins and bands) on the head of a woman (how is it?) He said: Wool and whatever is used from her own hair for herself are appropriate and correct, and it is disliked for a woman to attach another person's hair to her own, but there is no problem with wool or her own hair!'

📚Tahdhib, Vol. 6, Page 361

Abdullah ibn Hasan said: 'I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about adornments. He asked: What are adornments? I said: Wool that women put on their heads. The Imam said: If it is wool, there is no problem, but if it is hair (human), there is no goodness in it for the one who does it or for the one for whom it is done!'

Imam al-Ridha (peace be upon him) wrote in his response to Muhammad ibn Sinan: 'Looking at the hair of women, whether married or others, has become forbidden because it incites men, and this incitement leads to corruption and engaging in what is not lawful or beautiful, and likewise, what is similar to the feeling of hair.'

✅ From the above narrations, it is observed that connecting a woman's hair to another woman's hair is prohibited, and no permission for this prohibition is mentioned in the narrations. Considering that buyers of hair usually use it solely to connect it to other women's hair, it cannot be concluded that 'buying and selling women's hair in itself is not problematic'!

✅ On the other hand, in narration 5⃣ and similar ones, it is observed that putting on display and looking at women's hair has been prohibited. But can it be claimed without entering the domain of the infallible tradition that if a woman's hair is gathered and exposed to the sight of strange men, there is no longer any problem?

It is also clear that no specific narration has been received regarding the permission for buying and selling women's hair!

Taken together, these points and similar ones classify buying and selling women's hair at least among the doubtful matters, and our religious duty towards them is to abstain and take precautions:

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: 'Indeed, matters are of three kinds:

An affair whose guidance is clear and followed,

And an affair whose misguidance is clear and avoided,

And a matter that is complex (complicated and doubtful), the knowledge of which is left to Allah and His Messenger.'

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: 'What is permissible is evident, what is forbidden is evident, and the doubtful matters are in between!'

So whoever avoids doubtful matters will safeguard himself from the forbidden, and whoever indulges in doubtful matters will fall into the forbidden from where he does not know and perish suddenly!

And then, in the end of the tradition, it is stated: Abstaining from doubtful matters is better than falling suddenly into destruction!
