✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:

1⃣عن عبدالملك بن عتبة الهاشمي قال: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ عَنِ الشَّيْخِ الْكَبِيرِ وَ الْعَجُوزِ الْكَبِيرَةِ الَّتِي تَضْعُفُ عَنِ الصَّوْمِ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ تَصَدَّقَ في كُلِّ يَوْمٍ بِمُدِّ حِنْطَةٍ

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 116

Abd al-Malik said: I asked Imam al-Kazim (peace be upon him) about elderly men and women who are unable to fast due to weakness during Ramadan, and the Imam said: They give a measure (mudd) of wheat as charity every day!

2⃣عن أبي بصير قال: سَأَلْتُهُ عن رَجُلٍ مَرِضَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ إِلَى رَمَضَانٍ قَابِلٍ و لَمْ يَصِحَّ بَيْنَهُمَا و لَمْ يُطِقِ الصَّوْمَ قال يَتَصَدَّقُ مَكَانَ كُلِّ يَوْمٍ أَفْطَرَ عَلَى مِسْكِينٍ بِمُدٍّ مِنْ طَعَامٍ و إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ حِنْطَةٌ فَمُدٌّ مِنْ تَمْرٍ هُوَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ فِدْيَةٌ طَعامُ مِسْكِينٍ...

📚 Tafsir-i Ayyashi, Vol. 1, p. 179

Abu Basir said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person who becomes ill from this Ramadan to the next Ramadan and does not recover in between and cannot fast;

the Imam said: Instead of each day that he has broken fast, he gives a measure of wheat to the poor in charity, and if there is no wheat, he gives a measure of dates, and this is the divine saying (in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 184) which says: 'Fidya (compensation) is to feed a poor person.'...

3⃣ Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said regarding the expiation for an oath: He feeds ten poor people, for each of them a measure and a handful of wheat or flour or clothing them; for each of them, two garments or freeing a slave, and he has the choice of these three options, so if he cannot afford any of these three options, fasting for three days is upon him!

4⃣قال أبوعبدالله في حديث...و إِذَا قَتَلَ خَطَأً أَدَّى دِيَتَهُ إِلَى أَوْلِيَائِهِ ثُمَّ أَعْتَقَ رَقَبَةً فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ صَامَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَطْعَمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِيناً مُدّاً مُدّاً و كَذَلِكَ إِذَا وُهِبَتْ لَهُ دِيَةُ الْمَقْتُولِ فَالْكَفَّارَةُ عَلَيْهِ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُ و بَيْنَ رَبِّهِ لَازِمَةٌ

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a narration: "When someone unintentionally commits manslaughter, he pays the blood money to the heirs of the victim, then frees a slave, and if he does not have access to or the ability to acquire a slave, he fasts for two consecutive months. If he is unable to fast, he gives food to 60 needy individuals, providing each with a measure of food. Additionally, when the blood money of the victim is waived, he is still obliged to pay expiation between him and his Lord."

5⃣عن أبی الحسن الرضا فِی رَجُلٍ نَذَرَ عَلَی نَفْسِهِ إِنْ هُوَ سَلِمَ مِنْ مَرَضٍ أَوْ تَخَلَّصَ مِنْ حَبْسٍ أَنْ یَصُومَ کُلَّ یَوْمِ أَرْبِعَاءَ وَ هُوَ الْیَوْمُ الَّذِی تَخَلَّصَ فِیهِ فَعَجَزَ عَنِ الصَّوْمِ لِعِلَّةٍ أَصَابَتْهُ أَوْ غَیْرِ ذَلِکَ فَمُدَّ لِلرَّجُلِ فی عُمُرِهِ و اجْتَمَعَ عَلَیْهِ صَوْمٌ کَثِیرٌ مَا کَفَّارَةُ ذَلِکَ قَالَ تَصَدَّقَ لِکُلِّ یَوْمٍ بِمُدٍّ مِنْ حِنْطَةٍ أَوْ ثَمَنِ مُدٍّ.

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 144

Imam Reza (peace be upon him) said about a person who vows that if he recovers from illness or is released from prison, he will fast on every Thursday, the day of his salvation; so because of the pain he endures or other reasons, he becomes unable to fast, and his life becomes longer, and many fasts accumulate on him, and what is the expiation for that, he said: Every day he gives a measure of wheat or its value in charity!

✅ Giving food to the poor in expiations and compensations has entered various discussions of Shia jurisprudence, such as fasting, Hajj, vows, unintentional manslaughter, oaths, and... and for the type of food, things like wheat, flour, barley, and dates have been determined.

However, in the available narrations, specific or general permission to convert expiations and compensations into money and pay its value to the poor has not been reached, except in narration 5⃣ regarding someone who vows to fast and becomes unable to do so and pays a measure of food or its value for each day.

✅ To find out whether other expiations and compensations can be paid in money or not, we have to wait for the reappearance of our Master Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him) to ask him, and until then, for expiations and compensations, we must give the exact food mentioned unless there is a narration like narration 5⃣ allowing its value to be paid.
