Question 1804: How is the dowry (Mehr al-Sunnah) calculated and paid?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
1⃣عن عبداللَّه بْنِ سِنَانٍ عن أَبي عبداللَّه قال: كانَ صَدَاقُ النِّسَاءِ عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ اثْنَتَيْ عَشْرَةَ أُوقِيَّةً و نَشّاً قِيمَتُهَا مِنَ الْوَرِقِ خَمْسُمِائَةِ دِرْهَم
📚 Tahzib, Vol. 7, p. 356
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The dowry for women during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) was 12.5 uqiyah, which is valued at 500 dirhams of silver!
2⃣ Imam Jawad (peace be upon him) said in a sermon regarding the marriage of Umm Fadl:
Translation: Then Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Musa (peace be upon him) proposed to Umm Fadl, the daughter of Abdullah al-Ma'mun, and gave her as a dowry the dowry of his grandmother Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), which is 500 dirhams of good silver, so O Amir al-Mu'minin (meaning Ma'mun), do you agree to marry her with this dowry?
Then Ma'mun said:
نَعَمْ قَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَ يا أَبا جَعْفَرٍ أُمَّ الْفَضْلِ ابْنَتِي عَلَى الصَّدَاقِ الْمَذْكُورِ فَهَلْ قَبِلْتَ النِّكَاح
Translation: Yes, indeed, I have married my daughter Umm Fadl to you, O Aba Ja'far, with the mentioned dowry, so do you accept the marriage?
Then Imam Jawad (peace be upon him) said:
قَدْ قَبِلْتُ ذَلِكَ و رَضِيتُ بِهِ
Meaning: I accepted it and I am pleased with it!
📚 Iḥtijāj, p. 443
3⃣ Husayn ibn Khalid said: I asked Imam Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) about the dowry of the Sunnah, how it became 500 dirhams? The Imam said: Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has made it obligatory upon Himself that no believer recites one hundred times 'Allahu Akbar,' one hundred times 'Subhan Allah,' one hundred times 'Alhamdulillah,' one hundred times 'La ilaha illallah,' and then sends blessings upon Muhammad and his family one hundred times, unless a ḥūr al-ʿīn (a heavenly maiden) marries him and assigns these supplications as her dowry!
Then Allah, the Exalted, sent revelation to His Messenger that the dowry of believing women should be 500 dirhams, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) implemented this.
📚 Kāfī, Vol. 5, p. 376
✅ According to the above narrations and others, the dowry of Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her), known as Mehr al-Sunnah, is equivalent to 500 dirhams of silver.
✅ To calculate the dowry of women whose Mehr al-Sunnah has been stipulated, it is necessary to calculate the weight of a dirham and multiply it by 500, then pay the exact amount or its equivalent in the current currency or another.
✅ According to the information provided in question 796 at the link:
https://t.me/porseshvapasokhe/1299
each dirham is equivalent to 2.952 grams, so Mehr al-Sunnah is approximately 1476 grams of silver (about one and a half kilograms), which can be paid in its exact amount or its equivalent in today's currency.
✅ First Note: Due to the differences in calculating the weight of the dirham and the fact that silver coins are not common today, it is necessary to negotiate this amount between the wife and husband, as precise calculation of the dirham's weight before the reappearance of our Master Imam Mahdi (peace be upon him) is impossible or very difficult.
✅ Second Note: In today's laws, sometimes the equivalent of its gold dinar at the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) is considered for calculating Mehr al-Sunnah, but considering that the price difference between gold and silver today is much greater than that time, the dowry amount becomes much more than 500 dirhams of silver, while Mehr al-Sunnah is based on silver and has no relation to its gold equivalent at that time.
However, according to modern laws, how it is written affects the calculation method, so it should be clarified and explained to the wife which method is considered so that the amount of the dowry is completely determined, even if it exceeds 500 dirhams of silver, it cannot be called Mehr al-Sunnah anymore!
✅ Today, on the 16th of Shawwal, 1445 AH (25 Apr 2024), the price of one gram of raw silver is 56,310 Tomans, so at this price, Mehr al-Sunnah is equivalent to approximately 83,113,560 Tomans!
Of course, payment should be made according to the current price.
