Question 1802: In what cases is borrowing considered not reprehensible?

✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 5, p. 95

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: Refrain from borrowing, as it leads to humiliation and distress during the day and worry at night, it has to be repaid in this world and in the Hereafter!

✅ In the above narration and others, borrowing is discouraged because it leads to humiliation during the day, distress at night, and must be repaid in this world, and if not repaid, it will be accounted for in the Hereafter.

However, in some cases, borrowing is not forbidden but recommended, some of which are as follows:

1. Someone who has made necessary efforts to earn lawful livelihood but still faces shortages for his and his family's essential expenses:

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 5, p. 93

Musa ibn Bakr said: Imam Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said to me: Whoever seeks sustenance through lawful means to support himself and his family, is like a warrior in the way of Allah, so if he becomes financially overwhelmed and falls into poverty and need, relying on Allah and His Messenger, he may borrow an amount sufficient to provide for his family's needs. If he passes away before repaying it, it becomes the responsibility of the Imam, and if he does not repay it, the sin is on him. Surely Allah Almighty (in Surah At-Tawbah) says: 'Indeed, charitable contributions are... for the indigent, the destitute, and the workers'... until He says: 'and for those in debt.'

Such a person is considered poor, destitute, and indebted!

2. Borrowing for performing Hajj, provided that he has financial backing to ensure repayment in case of any unforeseen circumstances:

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 279

Musa ibn Bakr said: I asked Imam Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) about a person who borrows money to perform Hajj, and the Imam said: There is no problem if he has financial backing to ensure repayment in case of any unforeseen circumstances!

3. Borrowing for buying 'Noorah' for someone who has passed 21 days without using 'Noorah' but lacks the money to buy it:

📚 Khisal, p. 503

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: The tradition regarding 'Noorah' is to use it once every fifteen days, so if someone goes 21 days without it, he should rely on Allah Almighty to borrow and use 'Noorah,' and if someone goes 40 days without it, he is neither a believer nor a Muslim, and he has no honor!

4. Borrowing for marriage:

📚 Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 182

Abu Musa said: I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): May I be sacrificed for you! Is it permissible for a person to borrow and perform Hajj? He said: Yes! I said: Is it permissible for him to borrow and marry? He said: Yes! Indeed, he awaits divine sustenance morning and night!

✅ Borrowing for giving charity is also mentioned in the narration 📚Qurb al-Isnad, p. 44.
