Question 1800: Is it obligatory to lend to a needy person if one is able to do so?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following verses and narrations:
1⃣ Allah the Almighty says in Surah Al-Ma'un:
Woe to those who pray,
Those who are heedless of their prayers,
Those who show off,
And prevent the small acts of kindness (ma'un)!
📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 3, p. 501
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a narration: But by Allah, He has made certain rights in wealth obligatory, apart from zakat, such as ma'un, which includes the loan given, items lent, and acts of kindness done!
📚 Uqbah al-A'mal, p. 333
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Whoever withholds ma'un when his neighbor is in need, Allah will withhold His grace from him on the Day of Judgment, leaving him to his own devices. And whoever is left to himself by Allah will be doomed, and Allah will not accept any excuse from him!
📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 4, p. 14
In the Hadith of Prohibitions, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade withholding ma'un from one's neighbor and said: Whoever withholds ma'un from his neighbor, Allah will withhold His goodness from him on the Day of Judgment and will leave him to himself. And whoever is left to himself by Allah, how miserable his condition will be!
📚 Ma'ani al-Akhbar, p. 270

📚 Amali al-Saduq, p. 430

📚 Al-Tahdhib, Vol. 7, p. 162
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: Do not withhold loans for flour and bread, for doing so leads to poverty!
✅ Based on the verses and narrations above, lending to those in need is one of the examples of ma'un. Failing to lend a benevolent loan to those in need, when able and when conditions are met, is considered a sin that withholds rain from the sky, and various punishments for it are mentioned in the narrations.
Therefore, although lending is not obligatory except in cases of necessity, in the case of the borrower's need and when other necessary conditions are met, we are obligated to provide a benevolent loan.
