1⃣عن زرارة عن أبی جعفر فی حدیث قال: قال: فَإِذَا حُثِیَ عَلَیْهِ التُّرَابُ و سُوِّیَ قَبْرُهُ فَضَعْ کَفَّکَ عَلَی قَبْرِهِ عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ وَ فَرِّجْ أَصَابِعَکَ وَ اغْمِزْ کَفَّکَ عَلَیْهِ بَعْدَ مَا یُنْضَحُ بِالْمَاء

📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 1, p. 457

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, in a narration said: When soil is placed on the deceased and the grave is leveled, after water is sprinkled on the grave, place the palm of your hand near the head of the grave, spread your fingers, and press the palm of your hand on the grave!

2⃣عن إسحاق بن عمار قال: قُلْتُ لِأَبِی الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّل إِنَّ أَصْحَابَنَا یَصْنَعُونَ شَیْئاً إِذَا حَضَرُوا الْجِنَازَةَ و دُفِنَ الْمَیِّتُ لَمْ یَرْجِعُوا حَتَّی یَمْسَحُوا أَیْدِیَهُمْ عَلَی الْقَبْرِ أَفَسُنَّةٌ ذَلِکَ أَمْ بِدْعَةٌ فقال ذَلِکَ وَاجِبٌ عَلَی مَنْ لَمْ یَحْضُرِ الصَّلَاةَ عَلَیْه

Ishaq ibn Ammar said: I asked Imam Kazim, peace be upon him: Indeed, our companions do something, which is when they are present at a funeral and the deceased is buried, they do not leave until they place their hands on the grave. Is this Sunnah or an innovation? Imam said: This act is obligatory for someone who was not present for the prayer for the deceased!

3⃣عن عبدالرحمن بن أبی عبداللَّه قال: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ وَضْعِ الرَّجُلِ یَدَهُ عَلَی الْقَبْرِ ما هُوَ و لِمَ صُنِعَ فَقَالَ صَنَعَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَلَی ابْنِهِ بَعْدَ النَّضْحِ قال و سَأَلْتُهُ کَیْفَ أَضَعُ یَدِی عَلَی قُبُورِ الْمُسْلِمِینَ فَأَشَارَ بِیَدِهِ فی الْأَرْضِ و وَضَعَهَا عَلَیْهَا ثُمَّ رَفَعَهَا و هُوَ مُقَابِلُ الْقِبْلَة

Abdulrahman said: I asked Imam, peace be upon him, about the practice of placing the hand on the grave and what it is for. Imam said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, did this for their son after sprinkling water on the grave.

He said: I asked: How should I place my hand on the graves of Muslims? Then, while facing the Qibla, he gestured with his hand, placed it on the ground, and then raised it!

4⃣عن محمد بن أحمد قال: کُنْتُ بِفَیْدَ فَمَشَیْتَ مَعَ عَلِیِّ بْنِ بِلَالٍ إِلَی قَبْرِ مُحَمَّدِ بن إسماعیل بْنِ بَزِیعٍ فقال عَلِیُّ بْنُ بِلَالٍ قال لی صَاحِبُ هَذَا الْقَبْرِ عَنِ الرِّضَا قَالَ مَنْ أَتَی قَبْرَ أَخِیهِ ثُمَّ وَضَعَ یَدَهُ عَلَی الْقَبْرِ وَ قَرَأَ إِنَّا أَنْزَلْناهُ فِی لَیْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ أَمِنَ یَوْمَ الْفَزَعِ الْأَکْبَرِ أَوْ یَوْمَ الْفَزَع

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 229

Muhammad ibn Ahmad said: I was in the area of Fayd, and with Ali ibn Bilal, we set out towards the grave of Muhammad ibn Ismail ibn Bazi'. Then Ali ibn Bilal said: The owner of this grave told me: Imam Reza, peace be upon him, said: Whoever visits the grave of his brother and places his hand on the grave, reciting Surah Al-Qadr seven times, will be safe from the greater terror (the Day of Judgment).

📚 Al-Kashi's Rijal, p. 836

Muhammad ibn Ahmad said: I was in Fayd, and Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Bilal said: Let us go to visit the grave of Muhammad ibn Ismail ibn Bazi'. When we arrived, he sat at the head, facing the Qibla, with the grave in front of him, and said: The owner of this grave told me that he had heard from Abu Ja'far, peace be upon him, that whoever visits the grave of his believing brother, sits at his head, faces the Qibla, places his hand on the grave, and recites Surah Al-Qadr seven times, will be safe from the greater terror.

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, placing the hand on the grave after burial and sprinkling water on it, especially for someone who did not attend the funeral prayer, and during the visitation of a believer’s grave while reciting Surah Al-Qadr seven times, is Sunnah. However, there is no basis for placing the hand during the recitation of Al-Fatiha and other similar practices!
