Question 1785: What are the supplications for entering and leaving the restroom and after using it?

✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:

1⃣ Abu Usama said: I was with Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, when a man from the Maghiriya sect asked the Imam about something related to the Sunnah. The Imam said: There is nothing that any of the children of Adam need, except that Allah and His Messenger have established a Sunnah regarding it, which those who recognize it will recognize, and those who do not will not!

Then a man asked: What is the Sunnah for entering the restroom? The Imam said: You say a remembrance of Allah and seek refuge in Allah from Satan (say Istiadha), and when you are done, you say:

The man asked: Why is it that a person cannot wait and look at what has come out of them? The Imam replied: There is no human on the earth except that two appointed angels are with him, and when he is in that state (using the restroom), they turn his neck and say: O son of Adam, look at what you have strived for in this world and see what it has become!

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 69

2⃣ Muawiya ibn Ammar said: I heard Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, say: When you enter the restroom, say:

And when you leave, say:

And when you want to perform Wudu, say:

📚 Al-Kafi, vol. 3, p. 16

3⃣ Abu Basir narrated from either Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq, peace be upon them, that they said: When you enter the restroom, say:

And when you are done, say:

📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 1, p. 351

4⃣ Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, narrated from his forefathers from Amir al-Mu'minin, peace be upon him, that when he used to leave the restroom, he would say three times:

📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 1, p. 29

✅ Based on the Arabic text of the above narration, it is likely that the Imam would only say the last part, 'Yā lahā min ni‘matan,' three times and the beginning of the supplication once.

5⃣ Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, would cover his head when entering the restroom and say quietly in his heart:

📚 Al-Faqih, vol. 1, p. 24

📚 Al-Faqih, vol. 1, p. 25

Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, said: When one of you removes his clothes for urination or other needs, he should say, 'Bismillah,' for indeed, Satan will close his eyes until he is finished!

📚 Al-Faqih, vol. 1, p. 23

Amir al-Mu'minin, peace be upon him, said: There is no servant except that an angel is appointed to bend his neck so that he does not look at his excrement! Then the angel says to him: O son of Adam, this was your provision! Look at where you obtained it from and what it has become!

Therefore, it is appropriate for the servant, at the time (of looking at the excrement), to say:
