Question 1783: I am going from Tehran to my ancestral village in Lorestan to visit relatives, and I plan to stay for ten days. If during these ten days I visit neighboring villages and then return to my ancestral village, will my prayer still be complete in my ancestral village?
✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 224
Muawiya ibn Wahb said: I asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, what is the minimum distance after which a traveler shortens their prayer? He replied: One 'bureed' (about 4 farsakh) out and one bureed back!
📚 'Ilal al-Shara'i', p. 266, hadith 9
Imam Reza, peace be upon him, said: The prayer is shortened when the distance is over 8 farsakh, and when you shorten your prayer, you also break your fast!
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 230
Abdullah ibn Sinan said: I asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, about shortening the prayer (during travel). The Imam said: When you are in a place where you hear the adhan, pray it in full, and when you are in a place where you do not hear the adhan, shorten the prayer, and the same applies when you return from travel!
📚 Al-Faqih, vol. 1, p. 437
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: When you enter a city and intend to stay there for ten days, as soon as you enter that city, pray the full prayer. If you intend to stay there for less than ten days, pray the shortened prayer.
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 225
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said in a hadith: A person is not considered a traveler until they have traveled 8 farsakh from their home or city!
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 3, p. 298
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said in a hadith (about someone whose journey was 8 farsakh each way): Indeed, you are considered a traveler until you reach your home!
✅ Based on the above narrations and others, if someone leaves their home with the intention of travel and the distance they travel, or the total distance for both going and returning, is at least 8 farsakh, they are considered a traveler and must shorten their four-rak'ah prayers when they reach a place where they do not hear the adhan of their city or see the walls of their city. They also must not fast during the journey until they return home.
However, if during their journey, they enter a city, village, or land with the intention of staying for at least ten days, their prayer remains complete and they must fast during Ramadan, as this is considered a break in the travel.
If they leave that city or village, once they exit the designated travel boundary, they return to the status of a traveler, and the rules for a traveler apply. If they enter another village or city or return to the village or city where they intended to stay, their prayer remains complete and they may fast, as long as they again intend to stay for ten days.
Thus, a traveler who intends to stay for ten days in a city or village must re-intend to stay for ten days if they leave that city or village, even if they return the same day, for their prayer and fasting to remain complete. Otherwise, their prayer will be shortened and their fast invalidated!
Therefore, those who travel to another province to visit relatives and intend to stay for ten days, if they leave that city for recreation or to visit relatives in nearby cities, should be aware of this issue, either staying within the ten-day period or knowing the ruling on their prayer and fasting if they leave.
