Question 1776: Until recently, I was not a Muslim and was ignorant of the prohibition of usury (riba). I used money from riba to purchase an item. Now that I have become a believer, can I continue using this item?

✅ Answer: Please refer to the following narrations:

📚 Al-Kafi, Volume 5, Page 144

Hisham said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about a person who consumes riba while believing it to be permissible. The Imam said: It does not harm him unless he deliberately engages in it. If he does so deliberately, then he is in the position described by Allah Almighty (regarding usurers in the Quran).

📚 Al-Kafi, Volume 5, Page 145

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Any riba consumed by people out of ignorance, and they then repent, their repentance will be accepted if it is genuine.

📚 Al-Kafi, Volume 5, Page 146

Abu Rabi’ Shami said: I asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about someone who, out of ignorance, engaged in riba but later decided to stop. The Imam said: Whatever is in the past is for him, but from now on, he must refrain from it.

📚 Majma' al-Bayan, Volume 1, Page 392

Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: Walid ibn Mughira used to practice riba during the pre-Islamic era, and some of it was owed by the tribe of Thaqif. After accepting Islam, Khalid ibn Walid sought to collect it. Then this verse (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 278) was revealed: 'Fear Allah and give up what remains of riba if you are believers.'

📚 Masa'il Ali ibn Ja'far, Page 147, Hadith 180

Ali ibn Ja'far said: I asked my brother Musa ibn Ja'far (peace be upon him) about a person who consumes riba without realizing it is forbidden. The Imam said: It does not harm him unless he knowingly and deliberately engages in it.

📚 Nawadir Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isa, Page 161

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated: A person who had engaged in riba for some time went to Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) and asked about it. The Imam said: Your way out is mentioned in the Quran! Allah Almighty (in Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 275) says: 'Whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops (dealing in riba), what has passed is theirs.' The admonition in this verse refers to repentance. Considering the person's ignorance of the prohibition of riba and their subsequent awareness, what has occurred in the past is permissible for them, but they must abstain from it going forward.

✅ Based on the above narrations and others, if someone engaged in riba before accepting Islam or while being completely ignorant of its prohibition, thinking it was permissible, then what happened in the past is not held against them. However, once they become aware, they must stop dealing in riba, even if the initial contract was made before their awareness. If they continue dealing in riba after becoming aware, they fall into the category of usurers described in the Quran.
