Question 1737: What is the ruling on performing or avoiding actions and choosing the timing of activities based on the science of astronomy?
✅ Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Al-Faqih Vol. 2, p. 267
Abdul-Malik ibn A'yan narrates: I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), 'I am afflicted with this knowledge (astronomy). So, when I intend to do something, I look at the horoscope, and if I see an unfavorable omen, I sit down and do not pursue that matter. When I see a favorable omen, I proceed with that work!' The Imam asked, 'Do you engage in such practices?' I said, 'Yes.' He responded, 'Burn your books!'
📚 Al-Faqih Vol. 3, p. 50
Imam Baqir (peace be upon him) said: Amir al-Mu'minin (Ali) used to say, 'I neither take from nor act based on the words of an astrologer, physiognomist, nor a thief!'
📚 Al-Faqih Vol. 4, p. 6
Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrates from his ancestors that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) prohibited consulting astrologers and stargazers. He said, 'Anyone who goes to them and believes in them has disbelieved in what Allah revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)!'
📚 Al-Ihtijaj p. 191
In a Zindiq (heretic) narration, someone asked Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) about the science of astronomy. The Imam replied, 'It is a knowledge with few benefits and many harms. What is destined cannot be averted by it, and what one fears cannot be avoided by it. If an astrologer informs about a calamity, it won't save him from fate, and if he predicts good, he cannot advance it. If evil befalls him, he cannot avert it, and an astrologer, in his knowledge, opposes Allah because he thinks he can change divine decree!'

📚 Amali al-Saduq p. 338
Awf ibn Ahmar said: When Amir al-Mu'minin (Ali) intended to go to Nahrawan, an astrologer came to him and said, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin, do not move at this hour. Move after three hours have passed from the day, and you will achieve victory and success. If you go at the time I specify, you will face harm and severe loss.' Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said to him, 'Why?' He replied, 'Because if you move at this hour, you and your companions will suffer, and if you follow my order, you will achieve victory and get whatever you desire.' Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said, 'Do you know what is in the belly of these quadrupeds, whether they are male or female?' He answered, 'If I calculate, I can know.' Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said, 'Anyone who believes in your words has denied the Qur'an.' Allah (in Surah Luqman, verse 34) says, 'Certainly, the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah. He sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in which land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.'
Even Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) did not claim what you have claimed. Do you think that by specifying a certain time, harm can be averted from someone, and by going at another specified time, victory will be granted? Whoever believes in this has, with their statement, become independent of seeking help from Allah Almighty in this matter. To repel harm from oneself, they are more in need of turning toward you, and it is appropriate for them to praise you instead of their Lord, Allah Almighty. So, whoever believes in your statement, they consider you equal to Allah and opposing Him. Then the Imam said...
Then, attention was turned to that astrologer, and it was said to him, 'Instead, we reject you and oppose you. In the hour you forbade, we shall proceed!'
📚 Amali al-Saduq p. 338
✅ According to the above narrations and others, performing or avoiding actions and selecting the timing of various activities based on the science of astronomy and the words of astrologers is strongly condemned, and acting upon the conclusions of astronomical knowledge claimed by them is not permissible.
